Fourth full length release by Canadian metallers Despised Icon, one of the hottest names nowadays in the music industry. Not by luck of course, as they struggled enough to build a good name, mainly based in their frenzied live performances, which reflected their work in their studio in the best possible way.
”Day Of Mourning” seems to be a bet for the band, the movement with which they could conquer even the most doubtful ones. Here is I guess where the problems may begin. In their effort to make their music a little more complex or diverse, they seem to lose the point a while.
The structures of most songs doesn’t vary a lot from each other, making you feel like you listen to one long song. Of course, the last song ”Sleepless” is way too different, but the overall result is what I describe above. In terms, they play so fast that you really get impressed. But is this really what is necessary? It seems like they overproduced this album and by the time you start to get enthused, you start wonder different things. Something which is not good at all. Of course, the drumming is phenomenal, and the album is no rubbish, for God’s sake. The truth is that they have achieved better things in the past with their discography, I expected something more. Maybe seeing them live twice in two weeks this year, brought me more expectations than required.
I can’t tell you to ignore it, as they are a band worth listening to in all ways. But i can’t also tell you not to listen to their older records or even some other bands that have done better this year. Confusion still remains on my mind, it’s a little better than average, but a little worse than i thought.
