2012 is almost a month behind and it’s time for our yearly tribute to the best 20 albums of the last year. Metalpaths’ editors made their lists and that’s what came out of the votings!

No. 20: Witchcraft – Legend

Back in 2007, Witchcraft manage to release one of the best doom rock albums of the year with “The Alchemist”. Soon enough Magnus Pelander decided to fire all the members and start over again. A huge risk but they rose again with a contract with Nuclear Blast and a new album “Legend” released in September 2012. The new team is up to the task. The sound is heavy, the guitars powerful. The newbies fit perfectly given the impression nothing change since “The Alchemist”. The doom sounds from the 70’s is still here but also with an air of freshness and creativity. In “Legend” you find the riffing of Black Sabbath, the rhythms of Iron Butterfly and even little shades of AC/DC’s blues. Clearly an album that had a great impact in doom/rock scene.

No. 19: Crippled Black Phoenix – The Crafty Ape

To be totally honest with everyone reading this list of the top 20 albums of year 2012.. I never ever would have expected to be writing a text about a mammoth release by Crippled Black Phoenix circa 2012. But ladies and gentlemen “The Crafty Ape” absolutely blew me away! This record was beyond expectations, this band was beyond expectations, this record is a greatly told concept! Having their roots to the massive sound that post rock / post metal compositions can offer CBP take their music to another level using their influences for their own good and for our ears’ as well. Dialogues, soundscapes, sound effects and above all great music unveil in front of the audience as a movie although it actually is a music record! Imagery and music so nicely combined forming a work of art in this year’s release catalogues.

No. 18: Circus Maximus – Nine

After 2 great releases “1st Chapter in 2005 and “Isolate” in 2007 Circus Maximus delivers us probably their most mature and greatest release “Nine”. Outstanding production one of the best I have heard in the last years you can hear every instrument perfectly clear. Adding more AOR elements to their music but always with a progressive approach. Influences like Toto or muse (Burn After Reading) can be heard clearly. The guitar playing is more insane than ever but also very melodic, in  every solo is melodies can be heard and the instrumental parts like in “Burn After Reading” or “Used” gets you blown away. Mike Eriksen fills with his warm voice with emotion every song, especially songs like “Last Goodbye” bring you shiver. That’s what CM managed with this album is that they blended perfectly together progressive music with a more commercial sound, so that not only progressive metal fans but in general rock-metal fans will like this album and I think because of the melodies even a non-metal fan will like this record.

No. 17: Adrenaline Mob – Omerta

When Mike Portnoy left Dream Theater many fans thought that his days of glory had passed. He proved them wrong by being constantly busy, and his latest contributions are two of the most interesting releases of 2012, Flying Colors and of course Adrenaline Mob, making clear that he has the touch of Midas in everything that he participates. Along with the wonderful voice of Russell Allen, guitarists Mike Orlando and Rich Ward and bassist Paul Di Leo they created a tight quintet and released an album that many bands of the genre would envy. I honestly can’t find enough words to describe how awesome this album is so the best thing you can do is just listen to it! LOUD!

No. 16: Jeff Loomis – Plain Of Oblivion

Jeff Loomis returned with his second personal album with a completely different style from the previous one. The fans of Loomis and electric guitar fans in general are going to love this album which features some great, remarkable and variety songs without overwhelming the listener. The album features also a couple of guests like Marty Friedman, Tony MacAlpine, Chris Poland and Ishan. With all those guests couldn’t be less than masterpiece.

No. 15: Grave – Endless Procession Of Souls

Swedish Death metal: unique sounding razor-sharp riffs, dark atmosphere, vocals from hell and neck breaking grooves. This is how it started in the 90s. Grave are one of the most legendary representatives of that genre alongside with Entombed, Dismember and Unleashed and rightfully so! They’ve released from great to legendary albums throughout their career and they kept on delivering this year. With the change of members, new found inspiration came in to refresh the already consistent Death metal sound of the band. The trademark unrelenting Grave sound combined with the overall great mood of the band, gives us an absolutely killer Death metal record. If you wanna feel the actual old school Death metal vibe, you should definitely trust Grave.

No. 14: Enslaved – RIITIIR

In the year 1991 the formation of the great band under the name Enslaved took place. The name of the band was taken after an Immortal demo track called “Enslaved In Rot”. That was only the start of one of the most influential bands on Norwegian black metal. The term of black metal was early rejected by the band as they preferred the general label of extreme metal. Enslaved is out there playing extreme metal music for more than 20 years and they do it excellent. Since their first black metal album until their last era of progressive Viking metal as everyone labeled them what they do is a piece of art. In my opinion “RIITIIR” is an album that at the future we would refer to as a classic monument in music. Ivar Bjørnson and Grutle Kjellson, the founders of the band, gave an album that is a living entity and any metal and rock fan, I believe, should love it.

No. 13: Suicidal Angels – Bloodbath

“Bloodbath” is a furious thrash metal album that releases tons of adrenaline and energy. There are no surprises in this album for someone that has listened to Suicidal Angels before. From the first song of the album, the title track, until the last one, “Bleeding Cries”, a thrash storm is released through your speakers. “Bloodbath” is a classic Suicidal Angels record, with songs that will create hell in the mosh pits. The band is showing elements of involvement although there are not many major musical differences between “Bloodbath” and their previous albums. Also, Karl Willets of Bolt Thrower makes a guest appearance in the song “Legacy Of Pain”. Overall, “Bloodbath” is a very good album from a band that is becoming better and better in every record.

No. 12: My Sleeping Karma – Soma

I have to say only three words about “Soma”: simply magnificent album. My Sleeping Karma, this progressive/psychedelic/space/groove/call it what you will rock band has presented us its best work so far. The six tracks, separated by five interludes, are full of heavy rock riffs, as well as enchanting melodic parts that create such a mystical atmosphere. Whereas the main songs are quite dynamic, the interludes are more mellow, tying the material together perfectly and making it more fluid. Another quite interesting thing about this album is that mostly the interludes are composed in such a way so that only one instrument is complimented at a time, using also sounds of the nature. As I said before; “Soma” is in every way magnificent. The music is so intoxicating, like the namesake drink of the gods. My Sleeping Karma have outdone themselves in compositions, production and originality (they have even named the songs after the Soma drink). And let’s not forget the beautiful artwork, a creation by Sebastian Jerke. Take a careful look at it while listening to “Soma” and you will instantly find yourselves in a darker Wonderland.

No. 11: Amenra – Mass V

It’s one of these times when you feel the walls surround you. When you suffocate without reason. When everything seems bleak. When you feel trapped. When you can’t sense what’s real and unreal. When you sink yourself in sorrow. When you get filled with wounds on the inside. When you face something larger than you and you just submit to it. When you don’t know what has made you so inferior to the hidden aspects of life. When pain conquers all and is the only reality in life. For these few reasons and much more others, Amenra’s latest release ”Mass V” is the best album of 2012 in my personal opinion and surely the highlight release of the Belgians. Anyone who can face four mercilessly painful tracks of absolute self-catharsis, will also find his perfect music drug. Let the rest ignore them, you are the privileged one in any case.

Aggelos “Redneck” Katsouras

No. 10: Anaal Nathrakh – Vanitas

In less than a year and a half since their previous great album ”Passion”, England’s Anaal Nathrakh shocked the masses once again with their seventh album ”Vanitas”. It is amazing how they don’t lose in brutality and chaotic feeling and they always deliver darkened and pain-offering music which always balances between raw black metal and freaky grindcore sounds. V.I.T.R.I.O.L. does once more a tremendous vocal work and Irrumator takes over everything else. The duo can proudly claim a perfect-shaped condition and with albums like that, it is sure we won’t lose our interest in them quite soon. With each album they become more mature but not less speedy and punishing. Rightfully belonging in this list, ”Vanitas” is more than a challenge to listen. It is oblivion itself if you sink deep into it.

No. 09: Asphyx – Deathhammer

Aaah, the mighty Asphyx reunited in 2008 for the superb “Death…The Brutal Way” the year after, bringing a whole new generation of Deathsters in their fanbase (the writer being one of them). 3 years later comes the crush of the “Deathhammer”! Monstrous, bulldozer-like heavy riffs turning and twisting themselves into high speed neckbreakers combined with the unique Martin Van Drunen screams and the various lyrical themes from the Death metal scene itself to history, science fiction, war and natural disaster. Maintaining their trademark style the Dutch legends added one of the longest epic songs they’ve ever written (As The Magma Mammoth Rises), and delivering brutal perfection once more. Let’s put it that way: THIS IS TRUE FUCKIN’ DEATH METAL!

John Savvidis

No. 08: Ihsahn – Eremita

Ihsahn’s talents and musicality expand to an extend, that the average metalhead perspective can hardly handle all at once. Having an extrordinary carrier with former band Emperor, he and his colleagues, took black metal by the hand and placed it into a more extreme and intellectual place where none else could even think of getting it there. That place there seems to be where Ihsahn would rather stay forever. This place where his music could have no ordinary boundaries, forms or direction. Where everything follow the one and only rule, thus being freedom of expression. After his third statement “After” as a solo artist Ihsahn mixed his influences that have been drought inside his mind like a sponge that dries out a wet area and spontaneously he splashed all his knowledge with an almost historical progressive black metal record that set the standards way to high even for himself!!! “Eremita” followed the elements of “After” and moved a step further his knowledge and selfboundaries in terms of progress as a state of the art. “Eremita” was 2012’s best intelligent album and surely is amongst the top 5 albums of artistic freedom that this difficult year has surfaced. Excellent!

No. 07: Testament – Dark Roots Of Earth

I was truly believe that this album would be in the best albums of 2012 for couple of reasons. Testament returned heavier than ever in 2012 with a blast of riffs and solos, perfect vocals by Chuck, and one of the best drummers in history of heavy metal: Gene Hoglan. Actually, wherever he goes, it’s more than sure than the album turn out to be great. On the othere hand we can’t overtake the epic guitar moments by Alex Skolnick and Eric Peterson that will remain indelible in the memory of the listener.

No. 06: Dying Fetus – Reign Supreme

Following this band since their very first steps wouldn’t leave me outside of the waiting list for that album. And with the first second of Reign Supreme I realized that this band wont be out of inspiration at least in the short term meaning of it. This album is really brutal with groovy catchy guitar riffs be played along with the bass tunes and the insanely insane drumming of Trey Williams made this record a high light of this year’s releases. Along with the Nile album and the Cryptopsy one these three created their era in 2012 . A brutal era filled with technique making every extreme metal sound fan happy. Highlights of the album : “Subjected to a Beating” , “In the Trenches”, “second skin”.

George “Mindstab” Zabos

No. 05: Nile – At The Gate Of Sethu

This is the album that let me speechless when it arrived at my place and went to the cd player  straight away. Even now its one of my daily listening. I have read once on a Nile video in YouTube a comment  “Nile are the Mozart of metal”  and I so agreed to this comment. See its not the great riffs filled with eastern instruments or the great superfast technique drumming of George Kollias , it’s the whole Nile feeling evolving in every release of the band giving us their fans their  magnificent music. Clearly one of the top 5 albums this year nevermind out list in the webzine. Album highlights : the first 47 minutes of the album.

George “Mindstab” Zabos.

No. 04: Meshuggah – Koloss

If Obzen was the breakthrough to a wider audience for Meshuggah then Koloss is the album that co-signs the perfection of this band. The feeling that you get from the album is a constant kick in the nuts. It delivers some unbelievable rhythms to bang your head, riffs that defy the rules of gravity and an overall view of what Meshuggah sounds like. Technically flawless as always with musicians that have proven their enormous playing over the years, and have even influenced bands with a bigger name in the metal scene. It’s a pity if anyone that is into metal doesn’t indulge in this magnificent release. If you haven’t checked it yet, then this is the time!

No. 03: Kreator – Phantom Antichrist

Kreator are back 3 years after their previous album, “Hordes Of Chaos” with their new album, “Phantom Antichrist”. “Phantom Antichrist” is a very good and powerful record. Great guitar work has been done in this album in which you will find a lot of killer riffs and solos. Mille’s vocals sound as angry and strong as always. The album contains some great songs like the title track, “Civilization Collapse”, “Death To The World” and so on, that show that the band is in a very good creative mood. Surely “Phantom Antichrist” is one of the best releases of 2012 and Kreator once again prove that they are one of the greatest metal bands that have ever existed.

No. 02: Lamb Of God – Resolution

Here we have the 7th studio album by the Americans which proves once again why they considered to be one of the best metal bands of the last decade. “Resolution” is exactly what you expect: another classic “in-your-face” Lamb Of God record with sharp riffs (by probably the best guitar-duo nowadays), lethal drum and bass lines and, of course, the great Randy Blythe spitting his guts out in every song. Songs like “Desolation”, “Ghost Walking” and “The Undertow” have already became classic hits and some of the fans’ favorites in live performances. Debuted at number #3 on the Billoboard 200 and number #1 on The Rock Chart, “Resolution’s” second position on Metalpaths’ best 20 of 2012 looks more than fair to me!

No. 01: Gojira – L’enfant Sauvage

2012 and economic crisis over Europe is in the highest level. Hopefully, music can’t be harmed by this kind of crisis. Metal music is still strong and make us act violently. This is exactly what we are, we are wild children. But as “wild” Gojira doesn’t refer to strong and unscarred  people. In this album Gojira describe the unbearable pain and the darkest mentally problems that you can face. Hearing this albums you may travel to a dark mysterious place, noone near you just trees without leafs . You may sense the feeling of agony and misery on your way trying to escape. You will nail on your knees, crying with the sense of terror. This place is the dark side of yourself, the side where you are on your own, where nobody can protect you, In a world full of voices but saying nothing. This is L’enfant Sauvage; an album full of feelings, full of emotions. This is Gojira; not just an extreme technical band filled up with screaming vocals but a band producing art through music.
