Two years after the glorious return to Megadeth’s older forms of thrashing with the great album ”Endgame”, Dave Mustaine and his partners in crime set on releasing the thirteenth album of the band, simply entitled ”Thirteen”. If we put down thirteen albums in twenty six years of discography, since 1985, then it is more than a satisfactory number, proving that Megadeth have been one of the most productive pioneers of our music ever. Less or more, each album of the band is discussed for the new or old things it has to offer. Mustaine is undoubtedly one of the best guitar players (maybe the most complete one of all times for some people) and this makes him an even more trustworthy composer. Having released some of the best albums of the whole metal scene, it is very few things that they have to prove to their fans or haters.

This time, they decided they should stick to forms not that fast, compared to ”Endgame”. From the first moments of ”Sudden Death”, until the ending of the album with ”13”, for about 58 minutes all elements that made Megadeth a super group are inside the album. Clever and sarcastic songs the way Mustaine is a master in writing, some ironic and mid tempo ones like ”We The People” or ”Guns, Drugs, & Money” and some more speedy ones like ”Public Enemy No. 1” or ”Never Dead”. So pretty much, the album catches up almost three decades of a very important career. The only one we could compare Dave Mustaine is only himself. And that’s what we’re going to do, as there is no meaning in trying to state about changes or safe moves by such a band. It’s a Megadeth review after all, who cares about all other bands of the Earth anyway?

”Thirteen” finds Megadeth with the best line-up they’ve had since the departure of Marty Friedman and Nick Menza the past twelve years. First of all we have the return of the prodigal son Dave Ellefson for the first time in a decade, since ”The World Needs A Hero” in 2001. This is a very important fact on its own, as Mustaine finds his old friend and longer lasting Megadeth member to date by his side. Also, Chris Broderick on the guitars and Shawn Drover on the drums fill perfect the rest two positions and the team plays still in a high level. The production is very clear and they all seem to be in shape. Mustaine’s vocals have always been a love or hate situation, he can’t change his voice in his fifty, so it’s up to you to decide whether or not he sounds good to you, to me it seems he’s done some improvement here, as much as he could do that at least.

Also, another fact we should mention is that for the first time, Mustaine uses songs he’s recorded in the past, three in number, with ”New World Order”, ”Millennium Of The Blind” and ”Black Swan” having been on other releases, mainly singles or being bonus tracks to deluxe editions of ”Youthanasia” (1994) and ”United Abominations” (2007). It’s kinda strange because it seems like Mega-Dave repeats himself, and knowing how much of a perfectionist he is, it makes me consider the album lacks consistency, adding the fact that some other songs were written for soundtracks or video games. Also, in some parts of the album, you feel like you could listen to something better, thirteen songs on one hand, not all of them perfect on the other hand. The album loses the comparison to ”Endgame” at least, very easily. It feels they could do better.

So, if you are into a good mixture of the 1992-2001 era of the band (without including ”Risk” of course), then ”Thirteen” is the right album for you. Megadeth don’t rediscover the wheel in this album and though it’s very fun in some parts, it also becomes a little tiring in some others. It’s not the best nor the worst album they’ve done and it’s not the best nor the worst album of 2011 for sure. The thing it’s that if we didn’t talk about Megadeth, we might not care at all. But since it’s one of the bands that personally I adore and owe a lot for putting me to the magic world of metal, I must not play the blind dog that follows its master and I have to raise my voice. Considering rumors that it could be their last album, it could be an honest goodbye. Until this is proved true, we have the hope of something better released in the future hopefully.

MEGADETH’s new album, “TH1RT3EN”, sold 42,000 copies in the United States in its first week of release to land at position No. 11 on The Billboard 200 chart. The band’s previous CD, 2009’s “Endgame”, opened with 45,000 units to debut at No. 9. This was slightly less than the 54,000 first-week tally registered by 2007’s “United Abominations”, which entered the chart at No. 8. 2004’s “The System Has Failed” premiered with 46,000 copies (No. 18) while 2001’s “The World Needs A Hero” moved 61,000 units in its first week (No. 16).

“TH1RT3EN” first-week chart positions:

Australia: #13
Belgium: #83
Ireland: #43
Netherlands: #42
Norway: #32
UK: #34
USA: #11

“TH1RT3EN” was recorded at MEGADETH mainman Dave Mustaine’s Vic’s Garage studio in San Marcos, California with producer Johnny K (full name: John Karkazis), who has previously worked with DISTURBED, SEVENDUST, MACHINE HEAD and STAIND, among others. The artwork was once again created by artist John Lorenzi, who worked on the last two MEGADETH studio albums, 2007’s “United Abominations” and 2009’s “Endgame”, as well as the band’s 2007 box set, “Warchest”.

“TH1RT3EN” marks the recorded return of bassist David Ellefson who was part of the band’s classic lineup from 1983 to 2002. In a move that delighted the band’s legion of diehards, Ellefson returned to performing live with MEGADETH in early 2010 and has remained a fixture on the stage ever since. This is the first time Ellefson has played on a MEGADETH record since 2002’s “Rude Awakening”.

MEGADETH filmed the “Public Enemy No. 1″ video on September 17 in Santa Clarita, California. The clip was shot on a movie set where old Westerns are filmed.

The 25th-anniversary reissue edition of “Peace Sells” sold around 1,800 copies in the United States in its first week of release. The platinum-certified set was digitally remastered for the first time and made available in multiple configurations on July 12 by Capitol/EMI. All of the versions, including a 2CD lift-top box, digital album, and a deluxe 5Disc+3LP box set, include a previously unreleased 1987 concert from the band’s first world tour and new liner notes written by MEGADETH’s Dave Mustaine and METALLICA’s Lars Ulrich. The deluxe box set also includes previously unreleased and rare mixes of the album’s tracks and hi-res audio for the remastered album and concert, as well as an expanded 20-page book, plus 8″x10″ photos and reproductions of vintage MEGADETH memorabilia. The cover of the box uses a new, unique process of lenticular 3D which reinterprets the original cover, creating the illusion of MEGADETH’s Vic Rattlehead character jumping out of the art.

Released in 1986, “Peace Sells… But Who’s Buying?” was MEGADETH’s second album and the band’s first Capitol/EMI release. The acclaimed album thrust MEGADETH into the international spotlight, and it remains a powerful thrash metal staple.

In his liner notes for the new edition, Dave Mustaine reflects on writing the album’s title track: “I had written other lyrics by now, but there was something different about ‘Peace Sells’ because it told my story about my faith; my beliefs; my distrust of government; my work ethic; my integrity. This was MY song.”

“If there’s a new way, I’ll be the first in line”

“Amen!,” continues Mustaine. “I was so tired of not shaving, not bathing, not eating, not having a home, a companion, NOTHING. Yeah, I’ll be the first in line, but it had better work this time. Well, it was working, thank God, just fast enough for what I needed, but not nearly as fast as I would hope.”

“Whether you heard this record for the first time in 1986, or you hear this record for the first time today or tomorrow, ‘Peace Sells’ is a great heavy metal album,” writes Lars Ulrich in his liner notes for the new edition. “Nothing more, nothing less. It has stood the test of time. And will continue to do so.”

Dave Mustaine pioneered the hugely successful MEGADETH after his departure from METALLICA. Beginning with the band’s 1985 debut album, “Killing Is My Business… And Business Is Good!”, and evolving through a shifting series of lineups, MEGADETH has crafted a dynamic, intelligent style that combines the aggressiveness of thrash metal, the improvisational nature of jazz, and cynical, articulate, politically-charged lyrics into an innovative mix that has built a rabid worldwide following.

For nearly three decades, MEGADETH has taken heavy metal into the future — musically, lyrically, and culturally. The band has enjoyed great success on Billboard’s album and single charts, including three Top 10 titles on the Top 200 Albums chart and four Top 10 Modern Rock singles, “Almost Honest”, “Trust”, “Breadline”, and “Crush ‘Em”.

With defiance and grace, through unusual quality and intelligence, MEGADETH has raised a generation on a diet of truth serum and bitter pills. Instead of being kicked to the curb for their insolence, they’ve been rewarded with nine Grammy Award nominations, six gold, five platinum, and one double platinum albums, and three gold-certified DVD releases, in addition to last year’s double platinum concert DVD, “The Big 4: Live From Sofia, Bulgaria”.

A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.

NY Hard Rock Music Examiner: You’re the drummer, but I know you’ve played guitar on some ANTHRAX records, too. What is it about the guitar and drum playing that differentiates thrash metal, what you and METALLICA do, from other metal bands like, say, IRON MAIDEN or JUDAS PRIEST?

Charlie: I think a lot of times, with our form of music, and I know it’s the same with METALLICA, the drums and the rhythm guitars follow each other, where with other bands the bass and drums are locked in. But for us it’s always been the rhythm guitars and the drums that have been locked in. So maybe that’s where the difference lies. Me and Scott [Ian, ANTHRAX guitarist] play off each other, his right hand is going with my kick drum most of the time.

NY Hard Rock Music Examiner: Can you name your favorite MEGADETH, SLAYER, and METALLICA songs?

Charlie: METALLICA would be “Master of Puppets”. If I’m somewhere near the stage and I hear that song starting, I have to go watch because there’s something about it. And it has another significant meaning, about [late METALLICA bassist] Cliff Burton to me. Both bands were on tour in 1986 overseas and they were on the “Puppets” record, and one day we had a day off in England, and it was me, Scott, Kirk [Hammett, METALLICA guitarist], and Cliff, and we went to breakfast. And we sat down and were just talking about stuff, and I said, “In the song ‘Master of Puppets’, right before the lead break comes in, James [Hetfield, METALLICA frontman] screams something out, and I can never understand what he says. What is it?” And Cliff looked at Kirk, like, “I don’t even know.” And we were ordering breakfast at the time, and there was a bit of silence at the time, and Cliff said, “I think he says ‘pancakes.’” And we all started laughing, and it was funny, and then every show after that on that tour, when I would be on the side of the stage watching and that part would come up, Cliff would always look at me and mouth the word “pancakes.” So let’s go forward 20-something odd years, and here we are at the dinner before the first “Big Four” show in Poland, we had this dinner set up, METALLICA had all the bands there. And I was talking to James about some things and that story came up, and I told him, and he thanked me so much for telling him that story, because so much from that time is a blur to him, so when he hears stories it helps him remember the good times back then. So first show, in Poland, they did “Puppets”. But I wasn’t on stage. And the next day Robert [Trujillo, METALLICA bassist] goes to me, “Where were you? James screamed out ‘pancakes!’” So he does it now.

NY Hard Rock Music Examiner: That’s amazing. So you’re saying that anyone at the “Big Four” in September should listen, and they’ll hear James scream “pancakes” at that point?

Charlie: Well the lyric is “fix me,” but you never know, he might blurt out “pancakes.” So that’s another reason why I love that song.

NY Hard Rock Music Examiner: How about MEGADETH and SLAYER?

Charlie: Well, MEGADETH I love the song on “Peace Sells” called “The Conjuring”. It’s just a great fucking song, great guitar playing on that record, on that song, everything about it I just love. And, of course, SLAYER, I’d have to pick “At Dawn They Sleep”.

Paul Marshall of Guitar interactive magazine and Marshall TV conducted an interview with MEGADETH mainman Dave Mustaine backstage at the U.K. edition of the Sonisphere festival on July 8, 2011 at Knebworth. You can now watch the chat below.

When asked about the recording process for MEGADETH’s new album, “TH1RT3EN”, Mustaine said, “This record actually, the process was a little different because we really didn’t get a chance, [or the] luxury, of taking our time. We’d come off the road and somebody had said, ‘You’ve got about a two-month period. Do you think you can make a record in there?’ and I laughed. I thought, ‘You guys, you’re trying to kill me is what’s going on; there’s no rest for the wicked.’ You can’t put a horse away wet after you’ve run him in a race, you’ve gotta let him cool off. And it seemed like we just came off the last tour and just went right into the studio. But I’ve always believed my playing ability has been a gift, so rather than sit back and doubt what God’s given me, I just went in and I trusted the process. And we made a great record and we did it in the two months allotment. On top of that, I think that we also learned a lot about ourselves as musicians. We really went to a new level with our playing ability and we’ve got a great new partner with [producer] Johnny K. I mean, I was satisfied with our last co-producer, with Andy Sneap, and Andy really took us — and he even admits — as far as he could take us, and it was great because we wanted to go back to the big leagues where we were, and we feel that Johnny is, obviously, a big-league producer; not that Andy isn’t — don’t get me wrong. But we feel that this record is definitely one of our best. It’s a great feeling, because, you know, finishing some of the last record, I can honestly say, in my heart I knew that it wouldn’t contend with some of the great records in the past, just because of the timing, the label that we were on and stuff like that. Lineup changes and stuff… But I really think that everything just lined up for this record.”

“TH1RT3EN” is tentatively due in November via Roadrunner Records. The CD was recorded at Mustaine’s Vic’s Garage studio in San Marcos, California with producer Johnny K (full name: John Karkazis), who has previously worked with DISTURBED, SEVENDUST, MACHINE HEAD and STAIND, among others. The artwork will once again be created by artist John Lorenzi, who was responsible for the artwork on the last two MEGADETH studio albums, 2007’s “United Abominations” and 2009’s “Endgame”, as well as the band’s 2007 box set, “Warchest”.

Regarding what fans can expect from MEGADETH’s next album, bassist David Ellefson told Martin Carlsson of Expressen TV, “Let’s put it this way: It’s funny that 20 years ago, we came off ‘Rust In Peace’ and we went in and made ‘Countdown To Extinction’. So, to me, that’s kind of what this album feels like. We did ‘Sudden Death’ [for a title in the 'Guitar Hero' franchise, 'Guitar Hero: Warriors Of Rock'] and then this new song, ‘Never Dead’, which is a very violent riff. That was the first song we did, and we finished it top to bottom because we had to get it into this video game called ‘NeverDead’. So that’s a pretty good indication of what the new record is gonna be. But it’s a little wider than… That’s why I liken it to probably a little more to ‘Countdown To Extinction’, ’cause there’s a couple of songs that aren’t just full-on, in-your-face thrashing. However, most of it is. So you guys are gonna be excited. You’ll like it. You’ll dig it. You’ll have fun [listening to it].”

The “Big Four” bands of 1980s thrash metal — METALLICA, MEGADETH, SLAYER and ANTHRAX — played the fourth show of their European tour earlier tonight (Friday, July 8 ) at the U.K. installment of the Sonisphere festival at Knebworth House.

The highly anticipated onstage performance of the “Big Four” bands at the same time happened near the end of METALLICA’s set, between “Enter Sandman” and “Battery”. Members of ANTHRAX, SLAYER and MEGADETH joined METALLICA on stage for a cover of DIAMOND HEAD’s “Am I Evil?” before METALLICA ended the night with “Creeping Death”. Also taking part in the jam were members of the legendary NWOBHM (New Wave Of British Heavy Metal) band DIAMOND HEAD, who played on the same stage earlier in the night.

METALLICA frontman James Hetfield asked the audience, “Is there another band playing or something? What’s all this extra gear? It’s ‘The Big Four Band’, does that sound like a good idea? Celebrating 30 years of METALLICA, we invite SLAYER, ANTHRAX, MEGADETH and hopefully someone from DIAMOND HEAD to put the cherry on top.”

“You see that guy, if it wasn’t for Brian Tatler, there’s a pretty good chance none of us would be here tonight,” METALLICA drummer Lars Ulrich added while pointing at the DIAMOND HEAD guitarist, before the musicians launched into a version of “Am I Evil?”

METALLICA’s setlist was as follows:

01. Hit the Lights
02. Master of Puppets
03. The Shortest Straw
04. Seek & Destroy
05. Welcome Home (Sanitarium)
06. Ride the Lightning
07. The Memory Remains
08. All Nightmare Long
09. Sad But True
10. The Call of Ktulu
11. One
12. For Whom the Bell Tolls
13. Blackened
14. Fade to Black
15. Enter Sandman

Encore:

16. Am I Evil? (with DIAMOND HEAD, SLAYER, MEGADETH and ANTHRAX)
17. Battery
18. Creeping Death

In a recent interview with LA Weekly, Ulrich was asked why DIAMOND HEAD’s “Am I Evil?” was chosen as the song to be performed during last year’s first “Big Four” jam in Sofia, Bulgaria. “I can’t tell you a cosmic reason,” he replied. “We felt that you’re not going to invite people to come onstage and start playing a METALLICA song. That would seem a little selfish, so you want to find a cover song that had some resonance towards what’s going on. Everybody’s got different influences, different inspirations, but certainly the band DIAMOND HEAD has a lot to answer for when it comes to four bands playing out the desert in 2011 in terms of lineage. They’re probably one of the biggest reasons that we exist. When [Dave] Mustaine was in METALLICA, he was very inspired by them. I know DIAMOND HEAD may not have the same relevance for the boys in SLAYER, but you’ve got to find a happy medium at some point. We’ve got another half-dozen shows this summer. I would like to be a little more adventurous and not rely on the same song if there are continued jams. There are other things we can do, and I know that Tom [Araya] from SLAYER was talking about [METALLICA's] ‘The Four Horsemen’. Inviting the other bands to come up and play a METALLICA song just doesn’t seem right.”

The “Big Four” bands of 1980s thrash metal — METALLICA, MEGADETH, SLAYER and ANTHRAX — played the third show of their European tour last night (Wednesday, July 6) at Arena Fiera Rho in Milan, Italy.

The highly anticipated onstage performance of the “Big Four” bands at the same time happened near the end of METALLICA’s set, between “Enter Sandman” and “Damage Inc.”. Members of ANTHRAX, SLAYER and MEGADETH joined METALLICA on stage for a cover of MISFITS’ “Die, Die My Darling” before METALLICA ended the night with “Creeping Death”.

According to Musica Metal, ANTHRAX guitarist Scott Ian, who is sitting out nearly a dozen shows on the band’s current tour in order to spend time with his family following the birth of his first child (his temporary replacement is SEPULTURA’s Andreas Kisser), rejoined the group exclusively for the Italian date, claiming halfway through ANTHRAX’s set that he loves Italy too much to miss out on the opportunity to play the country again. Ian also took part in the “Big Four” jam session, as did SLAYER’s Dave Lombardo, who missed the Gothenburg “Big Four” jam on July 3 because he was getting tattoo work done on his arm. SLAYER guitarists Kerry King and Gary Holt (filling in for Jeff Hanneman) each had a beer on stage during the “Die, Die My Darling” performance, but didn’t participate in the jam.

More fan-filmed video footage and photos of last night’s “Die, Die My Darling” performance can be seen below.

METALLICA’s setlist was as follows:

01. Hit the Lights
02. Master Of Puppets
03. The Shortest Straw
04. Seek & Destroy
05. Welcome Home (Sanitarium)
06. Ride The Lightning
07. Through The Never
08. All Nightmare Long
09. Sad But True
10. The Call Of Ktulu
11. One
12. For Whom The Bell Tolls
13. Blackened
14. Fade To Black
15. Enter Sandman

Encore:

16. Die, Die My Darling (w/ SLAYER, MEGADETH, ANTHRAX)
17. Damage, Inc.
18. Creeping Death

The members of SLAYER could not join the July 2 “Helpless” (DIAMOND HEAD) jam at the “Big Four” show in Gelsenkirchen, Germany due to their travel arrangements to get to the next concert. They also missed the following night’s performance of “Am I Evil?” (DIAMOND HEAD) in Gothenburg, Sweden.

A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.

Papa Tomski Blog: Dave Mustaine once said that when he partnered up with you, it reminded him of when “Ozzy Osbourne met Randy Rhoads.” He also called you “the best MEGADETH guitarist ever.” Do you agree?

Broderick: I don’t know, that’s a big statement. I’m very glad and grateful that Dave thinks about me that way. It’s very humbling, but trying to assess who’s the best is like apples and oranges. It’s all about personal preferences.

Papa Tomski Blog: On February 8, 2010, [bassist] David Ellefson rejoined the band, replacing James Lomenzo, How is it to have him back?

Broderick: It’s awesome! There is this great camaraderie between him and Mustaine. To see them interact with each other is just amazing. It’s also a great privilege to play with such a big metal icon. He really is a great player and a good guy. We have a good time together on and off the stage.

Papa Tomski Blog: Your best and worst memory with MEGADETH.

Broderick: Let’s start with the best. I would have to say that it was that ["Big Four"] show in Sofia, Bulgaria. The crowd there was great, plus they had all those cameras, lights. The energy was very intense and the experience was truly exhilarating. Also in Warsaw, Poland we played in front of the biggest crowd you can dream of. Both of these shows were just insane.

Papa Tomski Blog: And the worst one?

Broderick: Tough to say, but last year I had that falling-on-stage spree: within a month I must’ve fallen at least 5-6 times during the show. I remember that one time in Oregon I tried to step over that lightning rig to get as close to the fans as possible, when I caught it with my heel, slipped and fell backwards. Landed on my head and it was damn painful. But I had to regain composure and keep on playing. I am sure it looked funny, but my head and neck hurt as hell.

Papa Tomski Blog: It’s been almost two years since you came out with your 12th album, “Endgame”. Rumor has it that you’re working on a new one. What is it going to be like? Will it be the best ever for MEGADETH?

Broderick: It’s true that we’ve been working on No. 13. Writing is almost all done, we are actually getting really close to finishing it. Will it be the best ever? I think so. The thing about the composing is that when you are working on it you are part of it. You almost have to “become” music that you create. You also have to believe in what you write and that it will be the best ever. Your music also matures with you over time, so I believe that each new album becomes the best one. And I am not being biased here.

Papa Tomski Blog: Your band was always known for problems with drugs/alcohol, but you — on the other hand — have always taken good care of yourself. Do you still party hard or have you convinced the other guys to join the gym?

Broderick: (laughter) No, we don’t party anymore. When we are on the tour we will go to a social event or hang out with other bands, but it’s not like cracking the bottle open and tilt it down till it’s empty. We are not youngsters anymore, so we know, that if we want to give our best night in and night out we need to take care of ourselves. We know that once we get off the stage we need to recover for the next show. And we all do it according to our own needs. I see my guys in the gym every once in a while, but everyone has their own regiment.

The drum tracking for the CD — which is tentatively due this fall via Roadrunner Records — began earlier this month, with the entire recording process expected to be completed by the time the group hits the road this summer as part of the Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival with DISTURBED and GODSMACK.

Speaking to U.K.’s Terrorizer magazine, Mustaine stated about the band’s upcoming album, “This is our 13th studio record, and we’ve already had a bunch of weird things happen. Car problems, stuff disappearing, a guy who worked for me that was the most white-laced guy you could imagine falling out on drugs and disappearing…but this one’s got me excited!”

MEGADETH’s platinum-certified 1986 masterpiece, “Peace Sells… But Who’s Buying?”, has been digitally remastered for the first time and expanded for a special 25th-anniversary release in multiple configurations. It will be released July 12 by Capitol/EMI.

All of the versions, including a 2CD lift-top box, digital album and a deluxe 5Disc+3LP box set, contain a previously unreleased 1987 concert from the band’s first world tour and new liner notes written by Mustaine and METALLICA’s Lars Ulrich.
