SOULFLY mainman Max Cavalera’s son Zyon sat behind the drum kit for the band’s July 31 performance at the Lokerse festival in Lokeren, Belgium. The concert also marked the debut appearance with SOULFLY of the band’s new bassist Tony Campos (STATIC-X, PRONG, ASESINO, MINISTRY, POSSESSED), who replaced Bobby Burns this past spring.

Zyon made many special appearances with Max’s other band, CAVALERA CONSPIRACY, on CC’s recent European tour, performing “Attitude/Cockroaches” at Sonisphere, With Full Force, and Hellfest festivals, to name a few. According to Max’s wife/manager (and Zyon’s mom) Gloria Cavalera, Zyon learned to drum “sitting at the feet of some of the most gifted metal drummers of all time, including his uncle Igor Cavalera, Bill Ward and Roy Mayorga, to name a few.” This was a special guest appearance only, since Zyon’s full-time band is MOLD BREAKER, which he formed with his younger brother Igor.

Puciato joined SOULFLY on stage at the 14th annual “D-Low Memorial” on August 28, 2010 at the Marquee Theatre in Tempe, Arizona to perform the song “Rise Of The Fallen”.

In an interview with I Heart Guitar, Max stated about SOULFLY’s collaboration with Puciato on “Rise of the Fallen”, “That was one of the great surprises of [the latest SOULFLY album] ‘Omen’. It turned out to be such a classic song, really a great, killer song, and it was done from scratch. I had the idea to invite Greg after I bumped into him at a DEFTONES concert in L.A. that we both sang with the DEFTONES, I invited him to come to the studio, and I mentioned the name of the song, ‘Rise of the Fallen’, and I wanted him to write original lyrics for it, and he felt really good about that. So he wrote all original verses and he helped me with the choruses. Every time I say ‘rise of the fallen,’ there’s a Greg response to that. He was just a great guy to work with. A lot of energy, really excited about the song. He really wanted to make the best song possible. I give him a lot of credit for making ‘Rise Of The Fallen’ one of the most exciting songs I’ve been part of in my career. It’s a track that stands out from the rest, I think. Greg’s ideas were really flowing.”

SOULFLY entered Edge Of The Earth studios in Hollywood, California on Friday, November 6 with producer Logan Mader (MACHINE HEAD, DIVINE HERESY, CAVALERA CONSPIRACY, GOJIRA, DEVILDRIVER) to begin recording its new album, tentatively titled “Omen”, for an early 2010 release. Working songtitles set to appear on the follow-up to last year’s “Conquer” include:

First of all, there was no local supporting band at the concert, which I find totally meaningless, both for the people attending the show and for the metal scene in general. There are several worthy bands in Greece that could have performed before Incite, which would have both prepared the crowd for what would follow and at the same time it would have helped in promoting the Greek metal scene.

Speaking of Incite, I have to state that their performance was the only good thing that I have to remember from that show! Even though the sound wasn’t that good, they were very good and seriously, Richie’s vocals are among the few great that I have heard live during the past couple of years. At the same time, I should give my respect to their drummer, Zak, who played with a cracked crash cymbal and yet managed to amaze us!

Moving on to Soulfly, I am truly speechless! What I saw is far from bearable. Even though music-wise they probably did great, as usual, I am unable to tell you for sure if they actually did, since the sound was so horrible that at points I couldn’t tell which track they were performing! Only specific parts, usually rhythmic ones, sounded ok and the rest were truly chaotic. However, regardless of who is to blame for the sound, the result was hardly acceptable. Nevertheless, it shows great disrespect to the people who actually spend time and money to attend such a show! Correct me if I’m mistaken, but when making out with your boyfriend/girlfriend at such a concert starts to seem much more fun than actually paying attention to the band on stage, something is definitely very wrong about the whole event! Last but not least, I found it very annoying that Max Cavalera spent more time backstage than on stage during Soulfly’s performance and also left the stage before the band finished the last track of the show, without saying a word to the crowd! If that’s not disrespectful then what is?! Honestly, the only part of Soulfly’s performance that I found worthy was the part where they brought two extra drums on stage and had two people from the front row play along with them.

Music-wise, they performed several tracks from their latest album, as well as from the old Sepultura days of Max Cavalera. The people at the concert however, seemed to enjoy more the Sepultura tracks than the actual Soulfly tracks! What is surprising is that Soulfly used several intros from other bands’ tracks – I can recall Carcass – to introduce some of their own tracks, which was ok, given that the people realized where the Soulfly track began…

Anyway, this is my point of view and obviously there will be people who will refute my beliefs, but I’m here to say what I think and you are free to decide by yourselves. However, I had to say all these things, because I’ve never felt so humiliated in my life before… It was like our presence didn’t matter… Like they wanted to get it over with… And this is definitely NOT what music and concerts are all about!

In a recent interview with U.K.’s Rock Sound magazine, SOULFLY mainman Max Cavalera revealed that the band has already began preparation for the next studio album which he stated “will not be as intense as [2008's] ‘Conquer’ but not as poppy as [2000's] ‘Primitive’ either; somewhere half way between the two.”

Writing on SOULFLY’s official message board, the band’s bassist Bobby Burns confirmed that “we’ll more than likely record a new record sometime towards the end of [2009], but it won’t hit the streets until next year.”

Polish extreme metallers DARZAMAT have tapped Roy “Maurice” Mayorga (STONE SOUR, SEPULTURA, SOULFLY) to create the intro to their forthcoming album, “Solfernus’ Path”.

Commented the band: “We’ve been aquainted with Roy for a couple of years. Roy was very fond of our record ‘Transkarpatia’ and he contacted us. Maurice is also a symphonic music fan, which is present on our records.”

DARZAMAT was enchanted with the intro that Mayorga created for his friend Dino Cazares (DIVINE HERESY, ASESINO, ex-FEAR FACTORY). “When we listened to what Maurice created for ASESINO, we had no doubts to entrust to him the work on the intro,” the band said. “After the KING DIAMOND guitar player Andy La Rocque, who recorded the solo to one of the tracks on ‘Solfernus’ Path’, Roy is another wonderful guy who will make a great contribution to our new album.”

Mayorga collaborated on the DARZAMAT intro with the band’s vocalist, Nera. The group explained, “Nera prepared some special soundtracks with her vocals, which were later used by Roy in the intro. It’s an incredible experience to cooperate with this guy! Maybe one day we’ll create something more with him than the intro only. We have a couple of similar musical dreams.”

As previously reported, DARZAMAT has tapped Jonas Kljellgren (SCAR SYMMETRY guitarist) of Black Lounge Studios in Avesta, Sweden to mix “Solfernus’ Path” for an early 2009 release. The new album is being recorded in Poland under the supervision of Jaroslaw Toifl, with whom the band had previously worked on 2005’s “Transkarpatia” (Metal Mind Productions in Europe, MVD in the USA). The drums and guitars are being laid down at HH Poland studio in Gliwice, while the vocals are being tracked at Maq studio. The keyboard parts are being recorded at Spectre’s (DARZAMAT keyboard player) home studio.

DARZAMAT vocalist Flauros previously stated about the upcoming CD: “For the first time in our band’s history, we’ve decided to create a concept album. It is a certain sort of novelty for us, yet we’ve had such an idea in our minds for a long time now. The coherent story, which is to be told by both the lyrics and the music, is a hell of a greater challenge than composing ten pieces in the similar stylistics. As the action proceeds, the music must ‘react’ accordingly and suitably. It is as if a screenplay, which is to attract the viewer in an interesting way.”

He continued, “The story contained on the record takes place in a mysthical set, indeed, which is created by the mansion of countess Josephine von Kuchmeister, the inspiration for which was the Villa Caro in Gliwice and the palace in Plawniowice. The action of ‘Solfernus’ Path’ takes place at the beginning of XXth century. The main character is a medicine student who undergoes a spiritual transformation. He goes beyond the carnal world and he notices the ‘other side.’ Everything is dressed in fairy-like climate, full of the occult ‘keys.’ Nothing is obvious, nothing here is predictable.

“The title Solfernus is of course not the main character of the story, but it’s eminence grise. The character of Solfernus derives from the play ‘Dalliance with Devil’ written by the Czech dramatist Jan Drda. It is only a tiny inspiration, an impuls where one should not seek any similarities. Drda’s play is grotesque and humorous, while our story is of a completely different character, much closer to Stefan Grabinski’s horror short stories than to the ones of the Czech playwright.”

DARZAMAT released its first-ever live DVD, entitled “Live Profanity (Visiting the Graves of Heretics)”, in North America in August 2007 via Metal Mind Productions (the DVD was released in Europe a month earleir). The disc was recorded at the 21st edition of the Metalmania Festival, which took place on March 24, 2007 in Katowice, Poland, and contains material comprised mostly of songs from the band’s latest album, “Transkarpatia”. Also included is the group’s surprise performance of the song “Diabelski Dom” by the cult Polish metal band KAT, featuring a guest appearance by KAT leader Roman Kostrzewski. The DVD also includes additional footage from the Winternachtstraum Festival, which took place in February 2007 in Arnsberg, Germany, two unreleased tracks, video clips, and an interview with Flauros and Nera.
