DEVIN TOWNSEND Has ‘No Interest’ In STRAPPING YOUNG LAD Reunion

Aniruddh "Andrew" Bansal of Metal Assault recently conducted an interview with renowned Canadian multi-instrumentalist, singer, songwriter and producer Devin Townsend. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below. Metal Assault: The last time we did an interview, it was September of last year and at the time you were telling me about this "Retinal Circus" show that you were going to do soon after. Here we are almost a year later, and you're soon releasing a DVD of that show. First of all, for you what was that experience like, doing that show in London? Devin: It was basically every emotion sort of wrapped up into one. Being perfectly honest, overall it was a really good experience but it was fraught with technical hurdles and I didn't actually recognize what we had done until I started editing it. In hindsight, it's great but at that time it was just a lot of stress. Metal Assault: What kind of technical problems did you face? Devin: Well, the ideas that I typically have for "Retinal Circus" or "Ziltoid" or any number of projects that I do are usually on such a scope that there's no feasible way you can do it with the amount of money and time that we usually have. "Retinal" was an extreme version of that. There were a 100 people in our performing group, we had a day and a half worth of rehearsal, and overall, we did achieve what I had hoped to achieve from the show, but to get it to that point it was chaos. You can imagine when there are a 100 people, including circus performers, choir members and people that had no connection to what I've done or to the music itself. They had to become familiar with the music and being on our stage, and all these things that went into this three-hour performance. We had props, we were playing songs we'd never played before, and I think there were 50 or 60 wireless units going. Something as simple as trying to find the frequencies for the wireless units became a challenge when we had to go and do it amidst the chaos of pulling off something that was so bizarre. For me, on a personal level, narcissistic to the point of nausea, it was a heck of a thing! But ultimately, for me it was a success. I tend to be hyper-aware of what I do and what it is that I project into the audience, I real awkward sort of quasi-nerdy thing. So by doing "Retinal", which was so awkward and so nerdy, it allowed me to kind of liberate that. It's what people are going to say now,

Said Billy: "I have always been a THE HAUNTED fan and became friends with the band over the years. When they asked if I would like to sing on a song for the new album with Marco singing, I didn't have to think twice about doing it. When I received the track and listened for the first time, I said, 'Fuck Yeah...this is gonna be brutal!'" "Exit Wounds" track listing: 01. 317 02. Cutting Teeth 03. My Salvation 04. Psychonaut 05. "Our old friend Andreas 'Diaz' Pettersson is back, an amazing artist with a rap sheet which includes the artwork on no less than four THE HAUNTED albums. He always finds a way to put our thoughts into print where he sometimes even scares us a bit...and this release in no different. "We decided on 'Exit Wounds' as being a good title for the album given the recent history of the band, but also a sort of a phoenix rising. "We are so excited about this little thing we've created! "Can't wait to get out there and start playing these songs and for me personally, I could not be more proud of what we have done. I really hope you're going to enjoy it!" The song will be released as a digital single and limited-edition 12-inch EP on December 4 via Behemoth/New Aeon Musick in Europe. The gatefold EP will be limited to 2,000 copies (1,000 on white and 1,000 on black 180-gram vinyl), all of which will be hand numbered and signed by the BEHEMOTH bandmembers. In addition to the title track, the single will include two more compositions that will not appear on BEHEMOTH's tenth full-length album, "The Satanist": "If I Were Cain" and a cover of "Ludzie Wschodu" from the influential 1980s Polish punk rock band SIEKIERA. The music video for "Blow Your Trumpets Gabriel", which was described by BEHEMOTH frontman Adam "Nergal" Darski as "killer" and "a monster," was directed by Polish producers Grupa 13, with whom BEHEMOTH previously collaborated on the clips for "At The Left Hand Ov God" and "Ov Fire And The Void". "Blow Your Trumpets Gabriel" single release dates: Dec. 4: U.S. Dec. 8: U.K. Dec. 6: Rest Of Europe Fan-filmed video footage of BEHEMOTH performing "Blow Your Trumpets Gabriel" during their October 19 appearance at this year's edition of the Loud Park festival at Saitama Super Arena in Tokyo, Japan can be seen below. "The Satanist" is due in early 2014 via Nuclear Blast in Europe and Metal Blade in North America. The CD was recorded at Hertz studio in Bialystok, Poland with the help of the Wieslawscy brothers (Wojtek and Slawek) and Daniel Bergstrand (MESHUGGAH, IN FLAMES, SOILWORK, STRAPPING YOUNG LAD). Other songtitles set to appear on the effort include "Messe Noir" (French for "The Black Mass") and "Ora Pro Nobis, Lucifer" (Latin for "Pray For Us, Lucifer"). The effort was mixed by Matt Hyde (SLAYER, HATEBREED, CHILDREN OF BODOM) and was mastered by Ted Jensen (METALLICA, AC/DC) at Sterling Sound in New York City. "The Satanist" cover artwork was painted with Nergal's own blood. He provided a container of his plasma to Russian symbolist painter and occultist Denis Forkas in Moscow. Forkas then blended the blood into the painting so that it would have a more "organic" feel. Additional artwork was handled by Metastazis and Zbigniew Bielak. "I wanted to incorporate some of my DNA into the art," Nergal told Australia's Heavy magazine. "This album seems to be so defining of who we are now as people and as individuals, and considering all the instances in recent years, [we wanted] to make it more 'ours' than it is usually." In a recent interview with Revolver magazine, Darski described BEHEMOTH's new songs as "very atmospheric" and "very emotional." "Think BURZUM meets NEW ORDER meets KILLING JOKE," he added. But at the same time, fans shouldn't expect the album to sound too far removed from BEHEMOTH's past efforts. "Take SLAYER, for example," Darski said. "Whatever genre they deal with, they still end up sounding like SLAYER. Even when they were flirting with nu-metal, it was a SLAYER record. Same with BEHEMOTH." According to Darski, at least some of the inspiration for the new BEHEMOTH album came from his five-month bout of leukemia he overcame in January 2011, after receiving a bone-marrow transplant. "When I was in the hospital, I was collecting experiences and emotions," he said. "I'm pretty sure that it's coming out now. There are moments I catch myself thinking about how my state was back then. It was me versus life, me versus death. It definitely changed my thoughts a lot. It's 100 percent being reflected in the record and songs I'm writing nowadays. I'm way more radical than I used to be." "Blow Your Trumpets Gabriel" teaser #3:

GENE HOGLAN: Teaser For ‘The Atomic Clock: The Clock Strikes Two’ DVD

A teaser for "The Atomic Clock: The Clock Strikes Two", the forthcoming DVD from legendary extreme-metal drummer Gene Hoglan (TESTAMENT, DEATH, STRAPPING YOUNG LAD, DARK ANGEL, DETHKLOK), can be seen below. In a recent interview with Metal Assault, Gene stated about what fans can expect to see on the forthcoming disc: "Well, I managed to get licenses to a lot of songs that I've played. We put together a small track listing of me playing along to the actual recorded versions of a lot of people's favorite tunes. "On the next one, I'm getting even more licenses, but on this one I've included a bunch of bands that I've played for and still playing for. That's the notable difference. "On the first "The Atomic Clock", I didn't get any licenses so I merely played to the bandMECHANISM, which at the time was my main focus. I even played two instrumental tracks ofMECHANISM as opposed to playing the whole song. This time I'm not playing instrumental tracks except for one from one of my more popular bands, but I've got all the basic instrumental backing tracks and I'm playing along to those as opposed to having all the vocals, samples and everything else on it. For the most part, that's a major difference and that's really exciting, seeing myself play to actual recorded tracks to some of these cool bands. "It's in the stages of editing right now. It's coming along great; it looks better than the last one and way more pro. It's an improved version of the last one. I'm still pretty light-hearted in it and I don't take myself real seriously. It's got a lot of footage that the last one didn't have. So I'm sure people checking it out will see that it's definitely a departure from the first one. That was done on a shoe-string budget, pretty much all by myself, but for this one I've got a team of experts helping me with it." Earlier this week, Gene announced a few of the tracks that will be included on the DVD: * TESTAMENT - "Rise Up" * MELDRUM - "A Toast To Romance" * GALAKTIKON - "On My Way" * STRAPPING YOUNG LAD - "Skeksis" The jam-packed DVD is available for pre-sale now, with several awesome package options.
