The Canadian black metal scene from Quebec or else Métal Noir Québécois consists of a lot of bands who have released quality albums. One of those is SORCIER DES GLACES who started off in 1998 while the latest and fifth album is entitled “North” and came out this year.

The intro “Passage au-delà des glaciers noirs” is cold and haunting in its simplicity, easing the listener in the atmosphere of “North”. “To the Snow-Crowned Mountains” does exactly what the title proclaims – travels us into the dark snowy paths in the mountains. The next track “La Noirceur éternelle” is a slightly grimmer composition as it can be understood by its title (The Eternal Darkness) whereas “Storming from Beyond” keeps a monotonous tempo which not only mesmerizes but also maintains the images and character SDG’s music unveils.

“Dawn of the Apocalypse” is far harsher than the previous tracks, more excruciating riffs, raw sounding drumming and Sébastien’s vocals appear more aggressive and powerful. The epic “North” brings out a melancholic, longing vibe and is undoubtedly the most melodic 8,5 minutes of the whole album. “Witchcraft” preserves the element of melodic epicness while the closing track “Rites of the Black Moon” completes the album with a distinctly more vigorous tone.

SDG’s raw black metal infused with melodies and ‘frozen’ elements build up an album best ‘served’ with chilly cold weather conditions as only white landscapes covered in snow come to mind while listening to “North”. Overall, it is an album relying a lot on the atmosphere created; for the fans of atmospheric black metal, this album will keep you great company during dark cold days.
