DEFTONES Begins Writing New Material

DEFTONES singer Chino Moreno has confirmed that the band has begun working on music for its eighth studio album. He told Soundwave TV last week: "I haven't personally started [writing new songs], but the other guys started last week, actually. So I'm excited to hear what they've done so far. I'm gonna check in with them next week." He continued: "When we make records, we don't plan on what kind of record we're gonna make; we never have. It's, like, we react to each other; one guy starts playing something and then the other guy reacts to it and the other guys reacts to it, and then, next thing we know, we have a song. I always think that's the best, organic way to write music, because you're not actually thinking about… Like, we don't have a gameplan as far as what kind of record or what it's supposed to sound like. As long as it's good, as long as we're happy and feeling it, what we're doing, it's worked for us over the years." Moreno himself just moved to Oregon, while drummer Abe Cunningham and keyboardist Frank Delgado remain in the band's hometown of Sacramento. Guitarist Stephen Carpenter lives in Los Angeles and bassist Sergio Vega is based in New York City. DEFTONES spent much of 2013 on the road behind their seventh album, "Koi No Yokan", which debuted at No. 11 on the Billboard album chart in November 2012 and yielded the Top Two rock radio single "Tempest".

ANTHRAX’s SCOTT IAN Says It’s ‘Idiotic’ For Fans To Film Entire Live Shows With Their Phones

Elliot Levin of the NY Hard Rock Music Examiner recently conducted an interview with ANTHRAX guitarist Scott Ian. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below. NY Hard Rock Music Examiner: You've been touring as part of a band for over 30 years. Is it an adjustment to tour solo [as part of your "Speaking Words" spoken-word tour]? Scott: Well, from a production standpoint, it's obviously much different, because I'm just out here by myself with a tour manager who also doubles as the merch guy and driving, and we're in a rent-a-car and we're driving out right after shows. So from that standpoint, yeah, it's a huge adjustment. I'm used to getting on a tour bus after the show and having a beer and going to sleep in my bunk. There's a level of comfort when I'm touring with the band. But at the same time, I embrace this. All the responsibility is on me, it's just me out here, and I enjoy that as well. The fact that I'm doing something that's outside of my bubble, and still outside of my comfort zone, and it's a new skill set for me and I love that I'm learning how to do this after all these years. NY Hard Rock Music Examiner: I'm surprised that there's not much leaked video of your show on YouTube yet. Do you prefer it that way? Scott: Yeah. That's because I take it down when people decide that they're going to put my content on YouTube for free. Call me crazy, but I'm one of those crazy artists that thinks you shouldn't give your content away for free. I know that's a crazy way to think these days but I come from the old school. Where you used to buy albums and videos. And I still do, I still buy my music and DVDs. So I feel like if I have enough respect to do that, then everyone should have enough respect to do that. NY Hard Rock Music Examiner: Do you feel the same way about live ANTHRAX videos on YouTube? Scott: I think it's idiotic. I think the fact that someone would come to a show, spend the money to come to the show, and stand there holding their freakin' phone over their head for 90 minutes is pathetic. It completely defeats the purpose of coming to a live show. I think it's a joke. I've seen Bruce Dickinson [IRON MAIDEN] go off on audience members for doing that. Granted, he's in IRON MAIDEN and they're big enough to say that to their audience, but I think it's idiotic and I don't understand that mindset at all. You're standing at a live show and you're watching it through a screen on your phone. NY Hard Rock Music Examiner: Do you think there's longevity in this spoken-word thing? Would you want to do it again? Scott: My attitude towards this is, I'm having fun doing this and that's why I'm doing this. I'm at a point in my life where I'm not trying to leave home anymore. I'm not looking for reasons to travel. I get enough of that with my band. I just want to be home with my family. But this is something that I've really been enjoying, and I do want to keep doing, for sure. I've even talked to the band's agent about when ANTHRAX starts touring again later this year or next year, when we have a night off in a city, if I can try and get me a talk show when we're there. KIRK HAMMETT Says EXODUS’ ‘Bonded By Blood’ Was ‘Just As Good’ As METALLICA’s ‘Kill ‘Em All’

In the latest issue of U.K.'s Metal Hammer magazine, METALLICA guitarist Kirk Hammett was asked if it's strange to him how much METALLICA has eclipsed the other "Big Four" bands of 1980s thrash metal — SLAYER, MEGADETH and ANTHRAX — in terms of commercial popularity. "I try not to spend too much time thinking about stuff like that because whatever I think of is still not going to be a satisfying enough explanation," he replied. "It's just the way things are and how the chips fell. "EXODUS [Kirk's former band and the group many think should included if the 'Big Four' were expanded and considered the 'Big Five'] in the '80s had some bona fide problems, but I think their first album [1985's 'Bonded By Blood'] is just as good as [METALLICA's debut] 'Kill 'Em All'. We were just playing the music we wanted to hear because no one else was playing it and it wasn't being played on the radio. It was only a small group of people who knew about it and it was almost elitist in that 'No posers allowed!' thing." MEGADETH mainman Dave Mustaine last year spoke to Radio.com about which band should have been included if the "Big Four" were expanded and considered the "Big Five". Mustaine said: "You know, people will say there's a whole another generation, like the 'Medium Four' [laughs], and I think there's a lot of great bands that fit that bill, too. But I think probably EXODUS, because there was nobody else at the time that had that kind of pull or that kind of importance in the metal community. Granted, it was with [late EXODUS singer Paul] Baloff, and Baloff had a voice that you had to have an acquired taste for, but you know, I liked him." In a 2010 interview with Metal Asylum, EXODUS guitarist Gary Holt was asked if he feels the "Big Four" should have been expanded and considered the "Big Seven", including EXODUS, TESTAMENT and OVERKILL. "Well, I think it should be the 'Big Five' with EXODUS, because we were there at the start of thrash metal with METALLICA in the real early '80s," he said. "Same thing with MEGADETH because [Dave] Mustaine was a part of METALLICA's birth and he also created MEGADETH. And SLAYER are SLAYER. ANTHRAX are also great and old friends, but if you listen to those first few records, they have definitely changed. TESTAMENT has every right to be part of the thrash metal legends, but it just came down to timing because they came later. And OVERKILL have been their since the beginning also. But I don't get hung up on that shit, because I know how it all started and I know where I was when the shit got created. We [EXODUS] certainly deserve to be part of the founding fathers, but you know who often gets excluded are the Germans — KREATOR, DESTRUCTION and SODOM. Everybody looks to America and forgets those guys. KREATOR, DESTRUCTION and SODOM all released records in the early '80s." He continued: "Really, the "Big Four" is solely based on sales and the ones who sold the most. But if you compare records, I will put EXODUS' last few albums up against anybody's shit. SLAYER is always awesome; the last TESTAMENT album [at the time of the interview], 'The Formation of Damnation', was great; the new MEGADETH [2009's 'Endgame'] is one of their best; METALLICA are still finding their feet again, and their last album, 'Death Magnetic', was a step in the right direction. The new OVERKILL, 'Ironbound', is one of their best records ever; it's so good. And KREATOR, DESTRUCTION, and SODOM still make great new music. What I think it boils down to is the bands who've been doing this the longest still can do it the best. METALLICA are still a mighty force live, but they lost their way for quite a while. But then again I've never had to deal with the horrible problem of having millions of dollars. [Laughs] Maybe if I had that kind of money, it would distract my hunger for doing this kind of shit, too. But, unfortunately for me, I have to keep kickin' people in the teeth, I don't have the funds to go art-shopping. My version of fine art is a new edition of Hustler magazine. [Laughs]"

2014 and 2015 Will Be ‘Great’ Years For Reunited DARK ANGEL

A new video message from reunited thrash metal pioneers DARK ANGEL about their upcoming tour can be seen below. Legendary artist Ed Repka has redesigned the classic DARK ANGEL logo with amazing results. Check it out below. DARK ANGEL guitarist Jim Durkin comments on the band's new logo and 2014 return: "I can't tell you how happy I am about the return of DARK ANGEL in 2014. These are a great bunch of guys and I wouldn't have it any other way. "We went back to our roots and got Ed Repka involved in the redesign of the classic logo. "DARK fuckin ANGEL have been working very hard on the music, I cannot wait to bring this monster back to the fans." As previously reported, DARK ANGEL will reform for a limited number of appearances in 2014 in the U.S. and select festivals in Europe. The confirmed lineup for these rare and unique, select 2014 shows will be: * Gene Hoglan (drums) * Eric Meyer (guitar) * Jim Durkin (guitar) * Ron Rinehart (vocals) * Michael Gonzalez (bass) Comments Hoglan: "DARK fuckin ANGEL has been working real hard behind the scenes, and I can't tell you enough how happy we are to bring this beast back to the fans. "I'll admit before the rehearsals I really didn't know what to expect, but let me tell you, you to will be as stoked as I am. "We have returned!" During an appearance on the September 8, 2013 edition of the "Heavy Metal Mayhem" radio show, Hoglan spoke about the DARK ANGEL reunion, saying: "The most important thing for, I think, any of us, and especially me, and I know a couple of the other guys that are involved that the legacy of the band is very important. And if the band has attained some of kind of underground legendary status over the years, then if we do wanna return, a lot of people have great expecations of us, we'd better exceed those expectations. "Like Ron Rinehart said, the definition of 'good' is 'not bad.' [laughs] We don't wanna come out and even be great; we wanna be No. 1. And that's a very heartening attitude. "If some of the people that might wanna get involved with this… You've gotta do it for the right reasons. This is for the fans. And we're gonna come out and disappoint the fans, don't do it. If we're gonna come out and make the fans go, 'Yes, I expected something great and I got godly.' Then there's a reason for doing it." DARK ANGEL released two albums with Don Doty on vocals — 1984's "We Have Arrived" and 1986's "Darkness Descends" — before he exited the group and was replaced by Ron Rinehart (after a brief stint with Jim Drabos in 1987). The band issued two more studio LPs — 1989's "Leave Scars" and 1991's "Time Does Not Heal" — before calling it quits in 1992. Rinehart, Hoglan and Meyer reassembled DARK ANGEL more than a decade ago but were forced to abandon their reunion plans after health issues reportedly put an end to Rinehart's singing career. DEVILDRIVER: Lyric Video For Cover Of AWOLNATION’s ‘Sail’

The official lyric video for DEVILDRIVER's cover version of indie/electro mob AWOLNATION's hit "Sail" can be seen below. The song appears on DEVILDRIVER's latest album, "Winter Kills", which sold around 11,000 copies in the United States in its first week of release to debut at position No. 32 on The Billboard 200 chart. This figure is in line with the opening number of DEVILDRIVER's fifth CD, "Beast", which also shifted 11,000 units back in February 2011 to land at No. 42. Regarding DEVILDRIVER's decision to cover "Sail", the band's lead singer, Dez Fafara, said: "Yeah. I was in the car one day and [my teenage sons] were playing the song and I absolutely connected with the lyrics 'Blame it on my ADD.' I mean, I suffered from attention deficit my whole life. And the song has the word 'sail' in it and I've been on tour for 20 years, so I liked it. I hit the guys up, they got back to me in five minutes and we're, like, 'Let's cover this.' But DEVILDRIVER likes to cover obscure tunes; we covered 'Black Soul Choir' from 16 HORSEPOWER. "We started to realize that's more fun; covering obscure stuff is more fun. We've never really done anything that's current … "My kids were playing it around the house and I was, like, 'Man, I really like this song.' We heard that AWOLNATION has heard it and they like the cover as well, which is really cool. When you're covering another artist's song and they like what you've done with it, that's always a pleasure." The instrumental parts for "Winter Kills" were recorded at Audiohammer Studios in Sanford, Florida while the vocals were laid down at Dez Fafara's home studio, with Mark Lewis (THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER, WHITECHAPEL, ALL THAT REMAINS) handling production duties. The album's cover artwork features a photograph by Dean Karr. The layout was done by Ryan Clark of Invisible Creature. "Winter Kills" was made available in four configurations, including a deluxe digibook with CD (including two bonus tracks, "Shudder" and "Back Down To The Grave") and live DVD (featuring 45 minutes of live raw DEVILDRIVER power — no studio overdubs at all, just the band at their best — and including fan favorites "Clouds Over California" and "The Wretched"), standard CD version, digital version and, for the first time in DEVILDRIVER history, a 2LP gatefold edition.

CROWBAR To Release ‘Symmetry In Black’ In May

New Orleans sludge metal veterans CROWBAR will release their new album, "Symmetry In Black", in North America on May 27 via Entertainment One Music. The CD, which will be made available in Europe on May 26 through Century Media Records, was produced by CROWBAR guitarist/vocalist Kirk Windstein and Duane Simoneaux and was mixed by Josh Wilbur (LAMB OF GOD, GOJIRA). Comments Windstein: "We are so proud and excited about what we have accomplished with this record! The focus, determination and attitude in the band is at an all-time high. "We are 100% ready to get this juggernaut rolling and never touch the breaks again. "CROWBAR will not be stopped!" The release of "Symmetry In Black" will coincide with the 25th anniversary of the CROWBAR's inception. Windstein continues: "CROWBAR is my heart and soul. The music is a part of me that I am extremely proud of. "It's an amazing feeling to be putting all of my energy and focus into something that I created 25 years ago! "We are extremely excited to release our 10th full length & to bring the riffs to as many people as possible on tour." Now that CROWBAR has finished recording, they'll head over to the U.K. for a handful of dates with HANG THE BASTARD and DROPBACK. The band is also confirmed for a handful of European festivals this summer, including Roadburn and Bloodstock Open Air. CROWBAR will make a bone-crushing appearance at Maryland Deathfest in the U.S. Windstein exited DOWN in September 2013 in order to focus "100%" on CROWBAR. He was replaced in DOWN by the band's longtime stage manager and HONKY founding guitarist Bobby Landgraf. CROWBAR last year announced the addition of bassist Jeff Golden to the group's ranks. Jeff is from Bolton, Connecticut, but currently resides in Estero, Florida. CROWBAR is: Kirk Windstein (Guitar, Vocals) Matt Brunson (Guitar) Tommy Buckley (Drums) Jeff Golden (Bass)

LAMB OF GOD’s CHRIS ADLER: ‘We’re All Very Proud’ Of RANDY BLYTHE

Bryan Reesman of GRAMMY.com recently conducted an interview with drummer Chris Adler of Richmond, Virginia metallers LAMB OF GOD. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below. GRAMMY.com: You officially stopped doing the "wall of death" at concerts about 10 years ago after you saw a couple of fans backstage who had been injured during the frenzied moshing. But it's still going on at shows, even if [LAMB OF GOD singer] Randy Blythe isn't encouraging it. Have you gotten to the point where you need to tell fans that they could hurt people? Adler: It's hard because this is where we came from and [what we] grew up doing. We realize it's very much a part of the show, but there is obviously some shared responsibility that we take as providing the soundtrack to whatever it is that's going on. Nowadays, it does change up a little bit. Randy does say, "I'm not going to preach to you, but we're all here for the same reasons." If you see somebody fall down or see somebody doing something unsafe, help each other out. Let's all get through this and have a good time together. It's very different than [turning] around and [punching] the guy next to you. At the same time, we're not going to tell people to go get some chocolate milk and sit down. GRAMMY.com: After the incident in Prague, what was it like being in that kind of twilight zone when you thought your career was almost done? Adler: I think we all have that idea in the back of our mind all the time, whether somebody quits or our audience is done with us or we've lost our relevance or whatever. Nothing lasts forever, and we're lucky we've gotten this far. It wasn't the first time we thought about it, but it was certainly the first time it was in our face. There was no way we were going to continue the band if Randy had gone to jail. It was very daunting to think that we were going to fill out applications at Barnes & Noble or set up some kind of LAMB OF GOD smoothie shop. We didn't know what we were going to do, but I think everybody was fine-tuning their B-plan a little bit during that time. It was very scary. GRAMMY.com: This court case has had a strong financial impact on the band. What does that mean moving forward for LAMB OF GOD? Adler: We've been very smart with our business model in that as we make money on tour, which is basically the only way we make money, we don't necessarily divvy it all up. We put some in savings for a rainy day, and this was a very fucking rainy day. It did pretty much wipe out that fund. No one had to sell their house or anything like that, but we also had to borrow from the next record fund to get through this. GRAMMY.com: How has Randy Blythe been doing? Adler: He's doing great. He's been sober now for over three years, and thank God he was sober when this situation happened. He's really pulled himself together. He's a remarkable guy, and we're all very proud of him going over and handling it the way he did, but at the same time this was not the film we wanted to make. This was a total fucking nightmare. … The guy spent a lot of time in jail and was on trial where he easily could've been sentenced to 10 years. The bottom line is that a fan of our band died, and it's hard to say whose fault that was, but it's still a very tragic situation and this nightmare that none of us can really wake up from. Randy obviously being the guy on trial for it, it's his nightmare every day. Read the entire interview

SUICIDE SILENCE: Video Footage Of UTOPIA RECORDS Signing Session

California deathcore masters SUICIDE SILENCE took part in a signing session and meet-and-greet on February 25 at Utopia Records in Sydney, Australia. Video footage of the event can be seen below. SUICIDE SILENCE recently entered the studio to begin recording its new album with producer Steve Evetts (SEPULTURA, THE DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN, WARBRINGER). The group's first CD with new vocalist Hernan "Eddie" Hermida (ex-ALL SHALL PERISH) will be released next summer via Nuclear Blast Entertainment, a division of Nuclear Blast Records formed by Nuclear Blast owner Markus Staiger and former Roadrunner A&R chief Monte Conner. SUICIDE SILENCE singer Mitch Lucker died November 1, 2012 after sustaining injuries in a motorcycle crash in Huntington Beach on Halloween night. "We never talked about continuing and we never talked about quitting, so it was like an unspoken thing, 'cause with some people, a tragic happening, the last thing you want to do is talk about it," SUICIDE SILENCE guitarist Chris Garza told Music Feeds. Ultimately, Garza explained, carrying on as SUICIDE SILENCE felt like the right thing to do. "I think keeping the SUICIDE SILENCE brand going and the name going keeps Mitch alive and I think it would be completely disrespectful to Mitch and everything that he worked for if we stopped going or changed the name," he added. "This record will be the grittiest, most meaningful piece of work we've ever stood behind,” commented guitarist Mark Heylmun. "We cannot wait for everyone to hear it. "Steve Evetts is someone we've worked closely with for a long while, not only on 'The Black Crown', but also on some instrumental demos just prior to the tragedy last fall. Here we are a year later prepping to record the nastiest, heaviest, most disgusting work we've ever done. Expect the unexpected." Regarding the direction of the new material, Heylmun told U.K.'s Metal Hammer magazine: "Eddie is quite a versatile vocalist and he's willing to experiment, so we're definitely exploring the horizons, but don't expect anything less than pure brutality throughout." Randy Blythe (LAMB OF GOD), Robb Flynn (MACHINE HEAD) and Max Cavalera (SOULFLY, CAVALERA CONSPIRACY, SEPULTURA) were among the "surprise" guests who performed with with the surviving members of SUICIDE SILENCE at a special show on December 21, 2012 at the Fox theater in Pomona, California as a tribute Mitch Lucker. All proceeds from the event went towards the education of Mitch's six-year-old daughter, Kenadee Lucker. The Pomona concert was professionally filmed for a DVD, "Suicide Silence - Ending Is The Beginning: The Mitch Lucker Memorial Show", that was released on February 18 in North America and will be made available March 17 in Europe as a CD/DVD digipack and CD/Blu-ray combo pack. SUICIDE SILENCE 2014 is: Hernan "Eddie" Hermida - Vocals Chris Garza - Guitar Mark Heylmun - Guitar Alex Lopez - Drums Dan Kenny - Bass
