PHILIP ANSELMO: ‘I Feel Very Blessed To Have Had Such A Great, Insane Fanbase’

Steel For Brains recently conducted an interview with former PANTERA and current DOWN singer Philip Anselmo. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below. Steel For Brains: From the moment you knew this was what you wanted to — where you knew music was a part of your heart and soul — what's that journey been like for you up to this point? Anselmo: You know, honestly, I think if you look at anybody's life, everybody's gonna have ups and downs, highs, lows, etc., and all of that. Believe me, it's well documented that I've been there, and that is absolutely the case. But, right now…at this juncture in my career, I gotta say, you know, aside from the obvious lows that have been, once again, well documented in the past and very well known, right now I'm at a very sturdy place. I'm in a very comfortable-in-my-skin place, and I feel very, very blessed to have had such a great, insane fanbase. No matter what fucking band it's been a part of. It's the fans really,

Dette previously filled in for Benante on ANTHRAX's European tour last fall as the support act for MOTÖRHEAD and Australia's Soundwave Festival in February/March. Asked how he landed the ANTHRAX gig, Dette told "The Blairing Out With Eric Blair Show": "Actually, Jason Bittner from SHADOWS FALL, who was filling in for Charlie on this last ANTHRAX run last year, couldn't do one of the tours that was coming up and called me and asked me if I would be available to do it. And I said, 'Of course. It would be great.' And the next day Charlie called me — which, Charlie is one my biggest influences ever, next to [Dave] Lombardo [of SLAYER], so it was kind of a surreal moment for me to get a call like that, saying, 'Hey, can you help me out?' Which, of course, I said, 'Absolutely"

Cuba’s First Heavy Metal Band To Defect: ‘We Didn’t Expect Things To Happen The Way They Did’

HIPNOSIS guitarist/vocalist Giovany Milhet spoke to Miami New Timesabout the Cuban heavy metal band's decision to request political asylum after arriving in Miami last Monday morning (July 22). According to Milhet, he and his bandmates declared political asylum as they were waiting in line with the representative from the Cuban government that was traveling with them. "It was a very difficult thing [requesting asylum]," Milhet said. "We didn't expect things to happen the way they did. We made the decision because the girl [from the Cuban government] who came with us was very uncomfortable. When we arrived at the airport in Miami, she told us: 'You can't go out of the airport, or the police will arrest you.' "What the fuck, man? She tried to put all of us in fear," Milhet said. "You'd have to be stupid to believe that."

Former THE HAUNTED Singer PETER DOLVING Says SPOTIFY Is A ‘Ripoff Construction’

AltSounds recently conducted an interview with former THE HAUNTED frontman Peter Dolving. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below. AltSounds: What do you think about the new and popular streaming services like Spotify? Do you think it is fair for the artists? Peter Dolving: Well, this is not even an opinion; It is NOT fair to the artists. ESPECIALLY if they sign the rights to their work away to an outside entity. It's really as simple as that. Spotify etc. are ripoff constructions. There is ONE place that do it right, and it'sBandcamp.com. True story. AltSounds: There's still a great discussion about how damaging that music piracy has been to the music industry and to the artists that try to sell their work. Do you think illegal downloads can help people to discover bands and records they would later buy merchandise, go to gigs or even buy original albums?
