Full Metal Jackie: GHOST has a new covers EP [out] called "If You Have Ghosts". It was recorded and produced by Dave Grohl [FOO FIGHTERS, NIRVANA]. Who initiated working together — GHOST or Dave himself?
Nameless Ghoul: I think it was… we bumped into him when we were doing festivals, and we just started talking about… I don't remember exactly what it was now, but we just got into the idea and the setup of possibly working together at some point, and this was late summer, last summer, and FOO FIGHTERS were just about to go on a little bit of a break and he just happened to have some time over. So, it was very quickly, sort of, decided that, well, we should do something very, very soon and very quick just in order to make it happen. Because if you do something and place it too far ahead, it might collide with something else. So, it was just a very, very playful project, very, yeah, very fun and inspiring.
Full Metal Jackie: A pretty interesting choice of artists to cover on this covers EP: ABBA, DEPECHE MODE, ARMY OF LOVERS... What about a song sparks your interests?
Nameless Ghoul: First and foremost, obviously, it has to be a good song. The criteria is, basically, there has to be something in the song that is an ingredient that you can change, you can alter it, you have to hear it like in an alternative version of the song. And secondly, lyrically, it needs to be sort of fitting with [GHOST frontman] Papa, 'cause obviously there are a whole, big selection of songs that you just want to find obscure songs, but it has to sort of fit into the concept in some way. Considering how extremely huge ABBA is, you know, "I'm a Marionette" is probably one of the songs that most people don't even know, so, it is always funnier to bring out a song that is not completely synonymous with the artist. As well as I think, you know, "Waiting For The Night" is not probably the most known DEPECHE MODE song.
Full Metal Jackie: Who else is on your wish list of people you'd like to collaborate with? What puts someone on the GHOST radar that you would want to work together with?
Nameless Ghoul: That's a good question. I mean, there's always, like, from an aesthetic point of view, there's so many cool, different sort of collaborations that you can partake in — either like a writing thing or purely an artist lending its talents to whatever you want to do, or it's a producer, or a mixer, or… there are so many things. There are so many people that are very, very skilled at what they do. But one thing that we've learned is that, you know, sometimes certain producers, certain people work very, very well together with certain bands, and vice versa. Whereas bringing someone on that is a name is not always a guarantee for success. So even though, from a personal standpoint, you have a lot of people that you would like to explore working with, I'm not entirely sure there are so many that we believe could do miracles with us, because it's a special, you know… As much as we try to find cool and funny songs to cover that will fit with Papa, it's the same thing if we want to bring someone onto our concept, and do like a feature thing. Which is definitely not out of the question, it really needs to be someone that fits in one way or another. Yeah, of course, we have ideas, but they are probably more… We try not to make them very predictable — you know, having some big lead singer from an old heavy metal band. That would not be very fun. I don't know. We'll see in the future. We have some ideas and we'll see if it works out.
Reunited thrash metal pioneers DARK ANGEL have been confirmed for next year's edition of the Sweden Rock Festival, set to take place June 4-7, 2014 in Sölvesborg, Sweden.
As previously reported, DARK ANGEL will reform for a limited number of appearances in 2014 in the U.S. and select festivals in Europe.
The confirmed lineup for these rare and unique, select 2014 shows will be:
* Gene Hoglan (drums)
* Eric Meyer (guitar)
* Jim Durkin (guitar)
* Ron Rinehart (vocals)
* Michael Gonzalez (bass)
During an appearance on this on the September 8 edition of the "Heavy Metal Mayhem" radio show, Hoglan spoke about the status of the planned DARK ANGEL reunion, saying: "We are trying to see if it can be something that we can all pursue. We all are in discussions.
"[Original DARK ANGEL vocalist] Don [Doty] got a little rambunctious, a little enthusiastic with some of the things that he put there [on the Internet regarding a ppssible reunion]. And we had to speak to Don for the first time, I guess, to get him to go, 'Hey, wait a minute…'"
He continued: "We all understand — we all should understand — that this isn't really just a matter of calling up the guys, saying, 'Let's put the band back together,' and then doing it. There's a lot more involved with it than that. So we're in talks and we're trying to see the future in it. And things are going well. We're all entertaining the idea, definitely, rather than somebody going, 'Nope. I'm not gonna do it.' And we even reconnected with [guitarist] Jim Durkin and we'll see what the possibility might be. And I'm trying to see if this works in my schedule, because I am of the mind — and this is just my opinion — but I am of the mind that a DARK ANGEL without Gene Hoglan is not a proper representation of the music, just like… If you're gonna reunite, I would want the entire band to reunite — the band that made the records. And that means the entire band. We had two vocalists. So we'll see where that goes even, you know?! But we're in talks and we're trying to see if we can make this a viable thing.
"The most important thing for, I think, any of us, and especially me, and I know a couple of the other guys that are involved that the legeacy of the band is very important. And if the band has attained some of kind of underground legendary status over the years, then if we do wanna return, a lot of people have great expecations of us, we'd better exceed those expectations.
"Like [former DARK ANGEL vocalist] Ron Rinehart said yesterday, the definition of 'good' is 'not bad.' [laughs] We don't wanna come out and even be great; we wanna be No. 1. And that's a very heartening attitude.
"If some of the people that might wanna get involved with this… You've gotta do it for the right reasons. This is for the fans. And we're gonna come out and disappoint the fans, don't do it. If we're gonna come out and make the fans go, 'Yes, I expected something great and I got godly.' Then there's a reason for doing it. And we're just trying to see if we're all on the same page for that. And so far we are; everybody wants to come out and do a great job, if we get to do this. Scheduling is the main issue, but we are trying to see what we can pull off, actually."
DARK ANGEL's management issued a statement in September accusing Don Doty of displaying a "lack of responsibility" by posting "false information" and starting "unfounded rumors" that have been "creating confusion" among the group's fans.
Doty previously made an online posting in which he claimed that Hoglan would not take part in the DARK ANGEL reunion because Gene was "unable to make the practices" due to his "many commitments."
DARK ANGEL guitarist Jim Durkin said in a statement that any talk of the band's reunion was "premature," and added that "when I was last in the band, Ron Rinehart was my singer. And IF the band were to come back and continue. he would STILL be my singer. He was our rock when we needed him and there is NO WAY I would do this without him. He and I talk daily and are as close now as ever. If anything, all this talk has brought us all back into more frequent contact! Which is a wonderful thing."
DARK ANGEL released two albums with Don Doty on vocals — 1984's "We Have Arrived" and 1986's "Darkness Descends" — before he exited the group and was replaced by Ron Rinehart (after a brief stint with Jim Drabos in 1987). The band issued two more studio LPs — 1989's "Leave Scars" and 1991's "Time Does Not Heal" — before calling it quits in 1992. Rinehart, Hoglan and Meyer reassembled DARK ANGEL more than a decade ago but were forced to abandon their reunion plans after health issues reportedly put an end to Rinehart's singing career.
Three members of DARK ANGEL rehearsed for the first time last month in preparation for the band's upcoming reunion dates. Eric Meyer (guitar), Jim Durkin (guitar), Ron Rinehart (vocals) and Michael Gonzalez (bass) came together in a Los Angeles-area rehearsal to run through a set of the band's classic songs. Drummer Gene Hoglan, who is also involved in the group's reunion, was unable to attend the rehearsal since he was busy touring with his "The Gene Hoglan Experience".
