DERRICK GREEN: SEPULTURA ‘Has The Right To Keep The Name And Continue On’

Live-Metal.net recently conducted an interview with vocalist Derrick Green of Brazilian/American metallers SEPULTURA. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below. Live-Metal.net: Is that at all surprising to you that it's taken so long for fans to accept you into the band, even after seven albums, 10-15 years, or whatever it's been. And is it still a challenge every day to win back these older fans? Derrick Green: It's not really that surprising. A lot of times in the world of metal when you're a fanatical fan of a band that you really enjoy, it's hard to see certain changes happen. There have been a lot of changes in bands that I have loved in the past and they made changes happen. But being an artist, I understand a little bit more that those changes were inevitable sometimes. It's just life. It's just constantly changing, and it's just something that you have to deal with. As an adult and as a human being, those things are going to happen. When you look at life that way and there are changes that happen for a reason, you can kind of get beyond living in the past. But instead a lot of people do, and I do the same because there are things I'm going to always love. But I love from that time period — that time period when I discovered SEPULTURA and "Arise", and I had a cassette tape that a friend gave to me and it was amazing. And I cherish it, and it can never be replaced. It can never go back truly to that time. It would be silly to even think that. For me, I think the challenge for us is the fact that we love what we do. We never walk away from this band, we have always stuck to it and we always stayed focused on creating new music. And music that we wanted to do. Everything was a process, and we knew that it would take time to evolve, to know each other, to get to do it together, to create music together. We needed that time to bond, and I think it was all a process of evolving for us. And we wanted to get better with each album, and I think we've been doing that since we've been together. And for us, that's always been our goal, to really focus on music and leave all the other stuff behind. A consequence of just focusing and doing what we do and the drive and not giving up has brought a lot of new fans that have never seen SEPULTURA in any period of "Chaos A.D." or "Roots" or "Beneath The Remains". So we have those new fans that truly appreciate what we've been doing since I've been in the band. And then they go back and listen to old stuff, and they have an understanding, but they're not really kind of dwelling on the past. And then there's the old fans that we brought back who had lost touch with the band and are not really feeling the changes. But they still have that hope and that glimmer, and they still like good music. So I think that we're able to produce some good music that people are interested in hearing, so it's great to see that mix. And I know that we'll never be completely bringing back all the old fans, but that's never been my goal. Our whole goal has really just been to create and write great music.

The CD will be released on October 29 (one day earlier internationally). ANDREAS KISSER Says CAVALERA Brothers ‘Turned Their Backs’ On SEPULTURA

Scott Morrow of MTV Iggy recently conducted an interview with guitarist Andreas Kisser of Brazilian/American metallers SEPULTURA. A few excerpts from the chat follow below. On SEPULTURA's early days: Kisser: "In Brazil, back in the '80s when we started, we didn't have the chance to see [many] bands live. It was impossible for bands to come down to Brazil — just big names like QUEEN orKISS. We used to pool together money from friends to buy one album and then make tapes for everybody. We formed this kind of underground scene that always looked for the releases and imported albums." On the split with the Cavalera brothers (guitarist/vocalist Max Cavalera and drummer Igor): Kisser: "For SEPULTURA fans, there are many SEPULTURAs in their head. It's not only because Max and Igor [left]. If you [compare] the albums that we did together, from'Schizophrenia' to 'Roots', they are totally different bands — but the same lineup. We all change; we all grow up. The choice to leave the band was their choice. We never fired any musician in the group. We only fired our manager after the 'Roots' tour, and Max chose to leave and stay with her and start a solo career. He didn't care about the name during those days. He didn't fight for the name. He just turned his back and said, 'Fuck you guys; I'm better off myself.' And Igor left 10 years later; he didn't care either to fight. It's like many fathers who have children and leave them. For [the Cavaleras], SEPULTURA is like an abandoned child. They really turned their back on us and left. But it feels great to be here and keep theSEPULTURA name strong, bringing new stuff to the albums. The SEPULTURA spirit never changed, and that's why we're still here as SEPULTURA." On the musical direction of SEPULTURA's new album, "The Mediator Between Head And Hands Must Be The Heart": Kisser: "[The idea] is just to be a better [band] all the time — try to top our best work. That's a very motivational and energetic feeling to have. [Producer Ross Robinson] really works the spirit of the music; he's not really too concerned about technical things but more about the performance and the concept of the songs, to really be in the DNA of everything that we do." On the new CD title: Kisser: "[The title] means that it's very important not to lose our heart, not to lose our human element. Because if you receive information through your head and act through your hands without your heart, you're nothing more than a robot with no questioning, no arguments, no protest. SLAYER’s TOM ARAYA: Having Drummer PAUL BOSTAPH Back In The Band ‘Is Awesome’

On October 9, Peter Atkinson of Metal-Rules.com conducted an interview with SLAYER bassist/vocalist Tom Araya. A few excerpts from the chat follow below. Metal-Rules.com: Are you interested in seeing people's reactions here to the new SLAYER, the new old SLAYER, or whatever people think it is? Tom: [laughs] I don't know. They've experienced SLAYER with Gary [Holt, guitar], and everybody's experienced SLAYER with Paul [Bostaph, drums] because Paul was part of the band for quite a few years, so it'll be time for everybody to get reacquainted with Paul and acclimated to this lineup. Gary has been playing with us for two years now, if you can believe that. People have seen the various pieces, just not all together. Paul's always been a friend. When he left, it was on his terms, and it was no bad feelings at all. Paul felt he needed to move on and it wasn't on bad terms and to have him back and playing in the band is awesome. It's like we're taking up where we left off with Paul and he's amazing. He's full of energy, he's excited to be back and he's excited to be part of SLAYER again. So it makes for very energetic shows and very exciting times. This is gonna be good. Like I said, everybody is going to be reacquainted with Paul and everybody knows Gary has been filling in, now it's just a whole different circumstance knowing that Jeff [Hanneman, guitar] has passed. I'm sure everyone will enjoy it. Paul is very energetic and excited, which makes everybody else excited. It'll be good and it will allow closure for everybody. Metal-Rules.com: How is Gary dealing with all this. He's in odd position — plus there's still EXODUS and I wonder if he's itching to get back to that, since it's his baby?

QUEENSRŸCHE Bassist EDDIE JACKSON Says New Lineup ‘Genuinely Feels Like A Rebirth’

Nottingham Post recently conducted an interview with QUEENSRŸCHE bassist Eddie Jackson. A few excerpts from the chat follow below. On the split with original QUEENSRŸCHE singer Geoff Tate: Jackson: "The three of us got together and once we'd made the decision to continue we started to map out the future. Geoff had been working on solo stuff for a while, so QUEENSRŸCHE had been shelved for a while so we'd been developing a side project called RISING WEST with the three of us, Parker Lundgren [guitar], who was with us for the last couple of albums, and Michael [Wilton, guitar] knew [new vocalist] Todd La Torre through another side project. "When things went the way they did, we decided to return to the QUEENSRŸCHE name." On returning to the band's musical roots following the split with Tate: Jackson: "We always wanted to revisit the older material, even back to our original EP from 1983. But for whatever reasons, we were never allowed to do it. "With the energy we have now, the songs all stand the test of time. It's been fun to go back." On QUEENSRŸCHE's new, self-titled album: Jackson: "For a few years, we haven't felt we've had the chance to express ourselves musically, but on the new album, all five of us contributed equally. "With the first five or six QUEENSRŸCHE albums, the group of us created our own sound and if you bring in a bunch of different musicians, even if the songs are the same, they won't sound the same. "We have our own styles and techniques that make up our sound and I thought that was missing from the last few albums. "With [once again working with producer] Jimbo Barton, this album is a return to our characteristic sound. Lots of fans have commented that the album sounds like it could have been released after [their most successful album in 1990] 'Empire'.

LACUNA COIL Completes Recording New Album

Italian heavy rockers LACUNA COIL have have completed recording their new album with producer Jay Baumgardner (P.O.D., SEVENDUST, EVANESCENCE, PAPA ROACH) for an early 2014 release via Century Media Records. Says LACUNA COIL singer Cristina Scabbia: "I am so anxious to hear it mixed and mastered." LACUNA COIL co-vocalist Andrea Ferro previously stated about the new CD: "We met Jay a few years ago in L.A. and had a really positive feeling about him, as he has produced and mixed some of my favourite records and some very relevant rock/metal albums. "We have decided to work with him, because he has the ability to work together with the band towards a common vision without driving the band away from their sound. NECROPHOBIC Parts Ways With Vocalist TOBIAS SIDEGÅRD

Cult Swedish black/death metal act NECROPHOBIC has officially parted ways with vocalist Tobias Sidegård. A Swedish appeals court last month reduced the prison sentence for Sidegård, who was accused of beating his wife multiple times between September 2011 and April 2013. Sidegård was originally sentenced to 18 months in prison for "gross violation of a woman's integrity," and offense that was first introduced into the Penal Code in 1998 dealing with repeated punishable acts directed by men against women who have or have had a close relationship with the perpetrator. On September 20, the Svea appeals court found Sidegård guilty of simple assault — a less serious offense than "gross violation of a woman's integrity" — and reduced his prison sentence to six months. The musician was also ordered to pay his wife 16,000 Swedish kronor (approximately $2,500) in damages plus interest. Said NECROPHOBIC in a statement: "Tobias is no longer a member of NECROPHOBIC. The verdict following his trial regrettably left us, the band, with no other choice. "As stated before, NECROPHOBIC do not accept or tolerate domestic violence in any way. "We will now search for a replacement. "Tobias will make a statement of his own within the next couple of days, which he will publish on his Facebook page." In addition to allegations of violence against his wife, Sidegård was suspected of physically abusing his daughters with a homemade bullwhip.
