DAVE LOMBARDO On SLAYER: ‘They Weren’t Really My Friends. They Were Just Business Partners’

Mark Dean of Myglobalmind webzine recently conducted an interview with former SLAYER and current PHILM drummer Dave Lombardo. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below. Myglobalmind: Looking back over your extensive musical career, what have been the particular high and low points? Dave: Well, it fluctuates; up and down, you know. A low point was probably January of last year whenever [the most recent split] went down, you know, with SLAYER. It was leading up to that, you know, unfortunately. Well, not really leading up to it, because my bags were ready and packed to go [with the band to Australia for the Soundwave festival]. Myglobalmind: It still must be difficult for you on a personal level? As they were your friends, and people that you had grown up with. Dave: Yeah, it's strange. It's unfortunate as well, because I realize now that they weren't really my friends. They were just business partners. I lived and hung out with them, as if they were friends. "Wow, these guys are watching out for me," and it didn't quite turn out that way. Myglobalmind: How do you feel one year on? Has your attitude to the situation mellowed, or…? Dave: Yeah, I have, I am more, like, "Oh, well, shit happens." Move on, you know. Myglobalmind: Are you generally a modest person about your personal musical talent and ability? How do you deal, for example, with compliments. I read, for example, that Bill Ward [BLACK SABBATH] called you “one of the best drummers in metal"? Dave: Yeah, I am honored. First of all, I am honored to have Bill Ward as my friend. This is a guy that I looked at these albums and listened to this music, and played along to these albums as a child and a little kid. For me to know Bill, it is surreal, and it feels very odd, but it is awesome. Myglobalmind: How do you find being a working and touring musician in the Internet age? Is it more difficult to make a living? Dave: Well, it is. Myglobalmind: You can't do this full time? I have talked to other guys who have established careers and still have to take other jobs because life is difficult, and can't sustain a living solely from music. Dave: Well, the thing is you have to find other ways and get creative and find other ways to market your music and to recreate yourself. It's, like, once the Internet and the worldwide web came into the picture, everyone scrambled, and the first was the music industry, because everyone was downloading music, so they started scrambling ways to make a living. So you just have to get creative. Yeah, it is difficult. It's a little different. The royalties aren't the same from the physical CDs, but there are other avenues of income that you just need to sign up online and you will start receiving royalties on the songs that you have recorded. I never knew this until recently, about six months ago, and it was, like, "Woah, I got a nice check in the mail." All I did was just go online and register my name all the music that I did in my life that I have recorded. Myglobalmind: That you weren't aware of, that type of royalties thing? Dave: I was never aware of. Nobody told me, thank you fucking very much. Myglobalmind: What about your health over the years? Playing drums at the velocity and energy levels that you exhibit regularly on stage, has that had any adverse health effects? Dave: Nothing. Absolutely nothing. Thank God. I've been healthy. The only things that have been wrong was I broke my leg and I had to stop for only about three weeks 'cause I got straight on the drums again. They said, "No, you gotta stay off the leg. No, no." I worked it up. Myglobalmind: It's in the blood, is it? Dave: Yeah, I just kept going and it was great. I wrote a song and it's on the new album, the new PHILM album, with a broken leg, so… But other than that, no. I drink a lot of water. I try to stay off the booze, although I like it, but there's limits. I try to eat right and I try to walk a lot. You could really become… You could grow stagnant. You could get very lazy if you don't stay active. Myglobalmind: Playing that type of music obviously is going to have that chance of health issues… Dave: I started PHILM, you know, when I noticed that [SLAYER], in a way, health-wise, was crumbling, not only with Jeff [Hanneman, guitar], but with Tom [Araya, bass/vocals] and Kerry [King, guitar] doesn't take care of himself. He should be careful. Well, I'm not going to tell him that… Myglobalmind: Nobody would tell him that. Dave: Nobody. And I'm not either. Myglobalmind: He's quite an imposing character, shall we say. Dave: Yeah, of course. He has a lot of insecurities. Read the

SEPULTURA: Enschede Concert Footage

Fan-filmed video footage of SEPULTURA's March 7 performance at Atak in Enschede, The Netherlands can be seen below. SEPULTURA's new album, "The Mediator Between Head And Hands Must Be The Heart", sold around 1,800 copies in the United States in its first week of release. The CD came out on October 29, 2013 via Nuclear Blast Records. Although it was inspired by Fritz Lang's classic 1927 movie "Metropolis", "The Mediator Between Head And Hands Must Be The Heart" is not a concept album or a soundtrack like its precedessors "Dante XXI" (based on "The Divine Comedy") and "A-Lex" (based on "A Clockwork Orange"). "The Mediator Between The Head And Hands Must Be The Heart" was tracked over a 40-day period at producer Ross Robinson's (KORN, LIMP BIZKIT, SLIPKNOT) studio in Venice, California and was mixed and mastered by co-producer Steve Evetts, who previously worked with SEPULTURA on the "Nation" (2001), "Revolusongs" (2002) and "Roorback" (2003) albums, in addition to having collaborated with Ross on a number of other projects in the past. In a 2013 interview with Live-Metal.net, SEPULTURA singer Derrick Green stated about the new album title: "We always have the simple one-word titles or very basic. And with this we knew what we wanted to do. We wanted to maybe make people think a little bit. "I think we have become lobotomized, including myself, because I'm not putting myself outside of anything. I think a lot of times we live in a time where people are thinking actions or creating ideas — doing something in their head but going right to their hands. And they're missing the essential part, the heart and the compassion, that's behind what you are doing. And (the title) came from a movie called 'Metropolis' (1927) by a director called Fritz Lang, and it's a silent movie. And it's actually the first thing you see in the movie. And the meaning behind it is just that: It's impossible to be human without having the heart dictate what you're doing and why you're doing certain things. "So I believe this album has that passion and drive and love for music. "So man

AMON AMARTH’s JOHAN HEGG: ‘It’s Always Been A Team Effort For Our Band’

Anthony Toto of Pop-Break.com recently conducted an interview with vocalist Johan Hegg of Swedish death metallers AMON AMARTH. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below. Pop-Break.com: On "Deceiver Of The Gods", the sound is heavily focused on melody with guitar leads and musical passages reminiscent of bands like IRON MAIDEN. You guys weren't afraid to wear your influences on your sleeve this time around. Johan Hegg: We always were influenced by a lot of bands before us but they were just never put into the albums or music before. On this album, we weren't really afraid of showing those influences so that's why you could notice it more. I think we managed to use those influences and make it onto our own but with a new twist. Pop-Break.com: One thing I appreciate about your band is the usage of imagery in your music; your lyrical content paints a picture of the stories you are trying to convey. The lyrics on your albums read like novels. Johan Hegg: Yeah, I mean, that's the way we always worked when it comes to writing lyrics. It's nothing really new and it's just the way we have done it throughout the years. Pop-Break.com: Bringing up IRON MAIDEN again, you look at different IRON MAIDEN album covers and Eddie's [IRON MAIDEN's mascot] presence draws in listeners from a visual standpoint. In a similar sense, your albums "Twilight Of The Thunder God", "Sulfur Rising" or "Deceiver Of The Gods", the covers have such an incredible mystique. What is the importance of having a great album cover? What does it mean for you in terms of showcasing your music? Johan Hegg: For us, especially growing up in the Eighties with IRON MAIDEN album covers and stuff like that, we loved those types of album covers; all of them. The album covers are definitely important for us. We want them to be powerful, majestic, epic, and all those themes to fit the music. That's why we wanted to do that with our album covers. We wanted the covers to properly sit in front or our albums and CDs. That's because of where come from as music fans ourselves. Pop-Break.com: Consistency in writing and performing has played a huge role in keeping this band alive and growing in terms of popularity. This lineup of the band has been together since 1998; could describe the chemistry of working with the same group of musicians for such a long time? Johan Hegg: Yeah, I mean, it's hard to describe why it works and why it doesn't work for some other bands because obviously, I have only been in this band. Laughs] I have no other reference really. We're just five guys with the same kind of goals, determination, and love of music. Obviously, that helps. I think the fact that we share everything equally; workload and money-wise as well. It's always been a team effort for our band and I think that's very important. Pop-Break.com: Being from Sweden, what is your take on AT THE GATES recording a new album? Johan Hegg: I think it's awesome and I'm really curious to see how that comes out. I listened to them a few weeks ago and they are still a big influence on my band. I'm very excited. I think it's the right move for them if they want to continue doing this reunion. They need to put something out there. I have feeling that it is going to be something spectacular because I don't think they would release anything less than what they would be satisfied with themselves. I'm really looking forward to hearing what they come up with. Read the

GEOFF TATE Is ‘Sorry’ QUEENSRŸCHE Fans Were Subjected To ‘Totally Distasteful’ War Of Words Via Court Documents

Singer Geoff Tate — who was fired from the Seattle progressive rock band QUEENSRŸCHE in 2012 after fronting it for three decades — has apologized to the group's fans for the "totally distasteful" war of words that played out in the press and court documents following the split, saying that there will be a "bright side" once a settlement has been reached over the rights to the QUEENSRŸCHE name. During an appearance on last night's (Friday, March 7) edition of "Eddie Trunk Rocks" (formerly "Friday Night Rocks") radio show on New York's Q104.3 FM, Tate addressed QUEENSRŸCHE fans directly, saying: "Thank you for all the amazing letters and support people have given me in the last couple of years. It's been inspiring. "I feel so sorry for people that have loved this band and watched this totally distasteful situation happen in the press." He continued: "It's so confusing for people, 'cause they can't discern what is hype and what is Internet rumor versus what is truth and what's a court case. In any other court case, there's so much untruth that gets said because people are trying to win. And the fans really get caught up in the middle of it. It's a very frustrating, confusing situation and I'm so sorry that it had to play out this way. But there will be a bright side, I promise everybody, and I'm looking forward to that as much as I'm sure they are." Tate and his former bandmates recently requested more time to hammer out a settlement in their legal battle over the rights to the group's name. King County Superior Court Judge Beth Andrus signed a new order continuing trial date, allowing the parties four more weeks to come to an agreement over the use of the QUEENSRŸCHE name and its associated trademarks. If they cannot reach an agreement during that period, the five-day, non-jury trial is set to begin on April 7. Tate and his former bandmates were previously granted five additional weeks in two separate trial continuances in January and February to work on the details of their settlement agreement. Tate and his wife, Susan, QUEENSRŸCHE's former manager, filed a lawsuit in June 2012 asking the judge to award them the rights to the band's name in exchange for Tate paying Eddie Jackson (bass), Michael Wilton (guitar) and Scott Rockenfield (drums) the fair market value for their interests in the QUEENSRŸCHE companies. Wilton, Rockenfield and Jackson filed a countersuit against the Tates in which they accused Geoff of creative obstruction and violent behavior, and Susan Tate of questionable business practices. While ruling against Tate, the presiding judge determined that there was no legal hurdle in Tate also using the name with an all-new lineup of musicians. "I don't see any reason that Mr. Tate can't have the benefit, if he gets other members, of whatever name he uses of using the brand," Superior Court Judge Carol A. Schapira said during the July 13, 2012 court hearing. "I think [doing that would be] inherently confusing, although I'm sure the market can get these things sorted out," she added. Tate's QUEENSRŸCHE now features Tate along with guitarist Kelly Gray (QUEENSRŸCHE 1998-2001), keyboardist Randy Gane and the band's latest additions, guitarist Robert Sarzo (QUIET RIOT, HURRICANE), Rudy Sarzo (OZZY OSBOURNE, QUIET RIOT, WHITESNAKE, DIO, ANIMETAL USA) and drummer Simon Wright (AC/DC, DIO, RHINO BUCKET). "Frequency Unknown", the latest album from the Geoff Tate-fronted version of QUEENSRŸCHE, sold around 5,500 copies in its first week of release in the United States to land at position No. 82 on The Billboard 200 chart. Issued on April 23, 2013, the CD was produced by Jason Slater at a studio in Northern California.

SATYRICON To Be Joined By Special Guests At Oslo Concert

Norwegian black metallers SATYRICON will play a special concert on March 21 at Rockefeller in Oslo, Norway. Says the band: "We will be joined by a brass ensemble consisting of members from the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra and the Norwegian Radio Orchestra. Some of these guys performed both on 'Now, Diabolical' and 'The Age Of Nero', and live with SATYRICON in the past. "With Nocturno Culto from DARKTHRONE already confirmed as special guest on 'Nemesis Divina' songs, THORNS mastermind Snorre Ruch will be there performing classic THORNS songs that Satyr recorded with him, and Sivert Høyem is joining for the new single 'Phoenix', the list of special guest is complete and one we are proud of. "The cult act THORNS is one of black metal's first and most inspirational band, influencing bands like MAYHEM, DARKTHRONE, EMPEROR, BURZUM and so on. Satyr has worked closely with THORNS' music, and Mr. Ruch worked closely with SATYRICON on 'Now, Diabolical' and 'The Age Of Nero'. Together, we will perform classic songs from the album THORNS that Satyr co-produced and did vocals on. THORNS do not play live, so this is the first time these song will be performed live with one of Norwegian black metal's most influential artists on stage for this exclusive." SATYRICON's self-titled album sold around 1,600 copies in the United States in its first week of release. This is roughly in line with the opening-week performance of the band's previous CD, "The Age of Nero", which premiered with 1,700 units back in November 2008. "Satyricon" debuted at position No. 1 on the official chart in the band's home country — the first time one of the group's releases topped the chart in Norway. "Satyricon" also saw success internationally, debuting at No. 6 in Finland, No. 23 in Germany and No. 26 in Austria. By comparison, SATYRICON's previous studio album, "2008'a "The Age Of Nero", entered the chart at No. 5 in Norway and No. 73 in Germany. "Satyricon" was recorded in Norway between January and May 2013 and was produced by SATYRICON frontman Sigurd "Satyr" Wongraven. Mixing

MACHINE HEAD’s ROBB FLYNN Checks In From The Studio

San Francisco Bay Area metallers MACHINE HEAD entered GREEN DAY's Oakland, California's JingleTown Recording compound on February 9 to begin recording their new album for a late 2014 release via Nuclear Blast Entertainment. Comments MACHINE HEAD frontman Robb Flynn in the latest installment of his online blog, "The General Journals: Diary Of A Frontman... And Other Ramblings": "As I step off the insane recording treadmill I've been on for a few weeks, one thing is for certain, it's all about slow and steady progress. I mean, I really wish I had more of an exciting update to give you, but I've been slammed recording guitars, laying down vocals, and working on some killer packaging ideas with the Nuclear Blast crew. "Less than a week before we got into JingleTown, we finished a pair of songs, one of which was literally not even an idea the week previous. Phil [Demmel, guitar] brought in some great, GREAT stuff at the 11th hour and we were able to turn it into a really cool song with the working title of 'Sharkbite Days Revisited'. The other song, formerly known as 'Blazing Saddles', just wasn't working. Even though it had some cool parts, it was just too goddamned hard to play and make it sound natural, so we back-burnered it for a while. It was the type of song where we finally realized our mortality, LOL! One of those 'dammit, I can't play this fast at my age anymore' kind of moments! But it was a song that came at a time when we needed a good kick in the ass, and it completely helped break my writer's block. It was the crack in the dam, and after that, all hell flowed. So if anything, it served its purpose well! "So on the second to last day of rehearsals, [Dave] McClain [drums] and I deconstructed 'Blazing Saddles', and then reconstructed it into a far simpler structure, and it's fuckin' rockin'! Less of a SLAYER/SLIPKNOT vibe, and more of a 'Screaming For Vengeance'-era JUDAS PRIEST feel to it. Appropriately, it has now been given the working title 'Simmering Saddles'. "I laid down some scratch vocal ideas on the 3 'newest' tunes, and made some huge progress on the song (working title: 'Riffnado'). I can already tell it's gonna be really cool. "So that's about it for now. I know it doesn't look like much, but as my engineer Juan says, 'There some blood on the board there' (pic below)." "Killers & Kings". The B-side will be a cover version of the track "Our Darkest Days" from one of MACHINE HEAD's favorite bands, IGNITE. The third of four tarot cards making up the cover artwork for the "Killers & Kings" single can be seen below. Also available is video footage of MACHINE HEAD members Phil Demmel (guitar), Dave McClain (drums) and Jared MacEachern (bass) laying down backing vocals on the "Our Darkest Days" cover version. Says MACHINE HEAD guitarist/vocalist Robb Flynn: "I remember growing up in the thrash scene and always wanting to hear the demo version of songs. You searched them out. Thankfully, my buddy Jim was a big 'tape trader,' and through trading, we had both METALLICA demos, EXODUS demos, bootlegs of songs sometimes 'years' before they came out. "I knew how to play every note of 'Pleasure Of The Flesh' by EXODUS easily two years before the record was out. I had SLAYER's 'Reign In Blood' three months before it came out. I remember it still had the hi-hat counts starting the songs!! "My friends and I would debate the merits of each (the demo was always better, LOL!). "It's so much cooler to hear it BEFORE the album is out! "So we're gonna do that for you. "I can't wait for you guys to hear this stuff. Then you can debate it, haha!" Tentative songtitles set to appear on the new MACHINE HEAD album include "Killers & Kings", "Beneath The Silt", "Eyes Of The Dead" (formerly "Ojos De La Muerte"), "Sail Into The Black", How We Die" and "Night Of The Long Knives".

ROB ZOMBIE: ‘The Zombie Horror Picture Show’ DVD, Blu-Ray Release Date Announced

Rob Zombie will release a new concert DVD and Blu-ray, titled "The Zombie Horror Picture Show", on May 20. To go along with the DVD and Blu-ray, there will be a "killer book" by photographer Rob Fenn, according to Zombie. "The Zombie Horror Picture Show" will feature footage filmed during stops on last year's Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Mayhem Festival tour in Houston on August 3, 2013 and Dallas on August 4. DVD and Blu-ray track listing is as follows: 01. Teenage Nosferatu Pussy 02. Superbeast 03. Super-Charger Heaven (originally by WHITE ZOMBIE) 04. Living Dead Girl 05. We're An American Band (GRAND FUNK RAILROAD cover) 06. More Human Than Human (originally by WHITE ZOMBIE) 07. Sick Bubblegum 08. Never Gonna Stop 09. Ging Gang Gong De Do Gong De Laga Raga 10. Meet The Creeper 11. Mars Needs Women 12. House Of 1000 Corpses 13. The Lords Of Salem 14. Dead City Radio And The New Gods Of Supertown 15. Thunder Kiss '65 (originally by WHITE ZOMBIE) 16. Dragula Zombie has never released a concert DVD before and told an Albany radio station that he always thought of doing one as a "huge nuisance," adding, "After the show is done, I don't care. I don't want to relive it… I never wanna hear about it again, I never wanna see it again. Like, I never watch anything — a TV show I've been on; I don't care. Once it's done, it's done. But I figured at least once we should film it." Zombie did roll cameras during his 2008 "Educated Horses" tour, but had very different plans for that still-unseen footage. "I didn't want to really just make a live DVD 'cause I thought, like, who cares," he told The Pulse Of Radio. What I really did was I made, like, a tour documentary, where like it starts with the first rehearsal through building the stage through, you know, traveling and flying and playing every show and after show and this and that. And, you know, it's so many hundreds of hours of footage." Zombie's fifth solo album, "Venomous Rat Regeneration Vendor", came out last April and entered the Billboard album chart at No. 7 with first-week sales of 34,000 copies. Zombie will kick off a 12-date run of shows on April 26 in Fort Myers, Florida at the Fort Rock festival, mixing other major rock festival stops with headlining shows before wrapping it up on May 10 in Camden, New Jersey. zombiepicturehorrorphotobook

Work On New TOOL Album Is Still Ongoing, Band Says

TOOL has released a statement to RollingStone.com explaining how a misunderstanding between the band's guitarist and a fan led to speculation that the group had completed its new studio album. "Last night, Adam Jones, in a private conversation with fans attending the Portland TOOL concert, joked that the band's new album was not only finished but coming out the next day," the statement reads. "Unfortunately, his off-the-cuff joke was taken out of context. Work on the forthcoming album is ongoing and as soon as it is done, trust me, we will be the first to let everyone know." Jones posted a message on his Twitter profile stating, "FYI, 'The record's done and it's coming out tomorrow' is what I said yesterday, followed by 'just kidding. . . '" TOOL kicked off its spring tour at Veterans Memorial Arena in Spokane, Washington on Tuesday (March 4) with a two-hour collection of fan favorites but not a single new tune in sight. According to RollingStone.com, the Los Angeles band opened its set with "Hooker With A Penis" and blasted through hits like "Vicarious", "Schism" and "Jambi" before ending with the triple knockout of "Forty-Six & 2", "Ænema" and "Stinkfist". The instrumental members of TOOL have acknowledged working on new music for a large portion of the past year, but have yet to give any sign that they are ready to hit "record." TOOL's last album, "10,000 Days", came out in 2006. The band has toured a few times since then. Keenan has kept himself busy with his Arizona wine-making business and his band PUSCIFER, along with doing some live work and a little new music with A

VINNIE PAUL Says HELLYEAH Is ‘Gonna Be Stronger Than Ever’

RockNLive.org recently conducted an interview with former PANTERA and current HELLYEAH drummer Vinnie Paul Abbott. You can now watch the chat below. HELLYEAH's fourth studio album, "Blood For Blood", will be released on June 10 via Eleven Seven Music. The CD was helmed by producer Kevin Churko at his The Hideout Recording Studio in Las Vegas, Nevada. Churko is the Canadian musician, sound engineer, songwriter and record producer who has previously worked with OZZY OSBOURNE, FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH and IN THIS MOMENT, among other acts. Prior to the recording of the new album, HELLYEAH parted ways with guitarist Greg Tribbett (MUDVAYNE) and bassist Bob "Zilla" Kakaha (DAMAGEPLAN). A replacement bassist in the shape of Kyle Sanders (former member of BLOODSIMPLE and the brother of MASTODON's Troy Sanders) has been secured. Still in the lineup are original drummer Vinnie Paul Abbott, guitarist Tom Maxwell and singer Chad Gray. Speaking to RockNLive.org about Sanders' addition to HELLYEAH, Vinnie Paul said: "After we realized we were gonna have to part ways with Bob and Greg, we wanted to make sure that we brought somebody in that was a 'bro,' somebody that we felt comfortable with. We didn't wanna go through an audition process and bring a whole bunch of different people in that we had no idea, anything about their character or dynamic or what they were all about. And Kyle had toured with HELLYEAH many times with his band BLOODSIMPLE, who we were all fans of. As a matter of fact, BLOODSIMPLE was on Chad's label when he had a label. And he was the first guy that came to our mind. And the first phone call we gave to him, we barely mentioned it and he said, 'I'm the guy. I wanna do it. I wanna do it.' And that's all we needed to hear; that was perfect. So he's gonna be a perfect addition to the band. We shot the videos together and we hung out, and he's really into it. So it worked out perfect for us. And to complement Tom on guitar, these songs for this record really have a lot of duelling guitars and a lot of parts, we're gonna add a touring guitarist. We haven't announced who that is yet, but I can tell you he's a hell of a guitar player. So we'll do that soon. And the band's gonna be stronger than ever. There's nothing like having some fresh blood out on the road with you. And these guys are gonna kill, we're gonna kill, and we've got a great new record to tour with." A press release describes "Blood For Blood" as a "welcome return to form" for the band, adding that it "sounds like a recharged HELLYEAH, taken up many notches." HELLYEAH will hit the road this spring, starting with several festival slots in April and May. HELLYEAH was formed in 2006 by NOTHINGFACE guitarist Tom Maxwell and bassist Jerry Montano, MUDVAYNE singer Chad Gray and guitarist Greg Tribbett, and former PANTERA and DAMAGEPLAN drummer Vinnie Paul Abbott. Montano left a week after the release of the band's self-titled debut album in 2007 and was replaced by Bob "Zilla" Kakaha, who had played with Abbott in DAMAGEPLAN. HELLYEAH's other albums include 2009's "Stampede" and 2011's "Band Of Brothers". MUDVAYNE has not released an album since 2009 while Gray and Tribbett have been working with HELLYEAH.
