SEPULTURA Singer Says Recording With Producer ROSS ROBINSON ‘Was A Beautiful Experience’

Raymond Westland of Ghost Cult Magazine recently conducted an interview with vocalist Derrick Green of Brazilian/American thrashers SEPULTURA. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below. Ghost Cult Magazine: "The Mediator Between Head And Hands Must Be The Heart" is very spirited and dark album. How come? Derrick: I don't know, really. The album was recorded in Venice Beach, California. A lot of the material was written in Sao Paulo [Brazil]. There were a lot of things going on at the time in the world. There was a new pope elected and there was a lot of social upheaval about the upcoming World Cup and Olympic Games, especially about all the corruption going. A lot of the money is invested in stadiums, while the populace are clamouring for hospitals and schools. A lot of it was coming from the things happening around us. Another major factor is our drummer,Eloy Casagrande. Writing music with him changed a lot. He really likes to play metal and he's really passionate about it. He's very young and the energy he brought with him pushed the rest of us to step up our game. He really wanted to leave his mark and that makes the new album very different from the previous one, I think. It was his dream to play in SEPULTURA and we really needed that type of kick and he really brought that. Ghost Cult Magazine: Ross Robinson produced the new album. He has quite a reputation of bringing bands to the edge mentally in order to capture the best performance possible. How did he go about with SEPULTURA? Derrick: He had a free pass with Andreas [Kisser, guitar] and Paulo [Xisto Pinto Jr.]. He already recorded with them during the "Roots" album, so he was already familiar with the inner workings of SEPULTURA. He talked with them how "Roots" changed his life and how it opened a lot of doors for him as a producer. With the second time around, he really wanted to make an album that was different from "Roots", but with that same type of energy. He already knew what we're capable of. He was there with us in the room while we recorded our instruments literally pushing us physically. He constantly asked why certain parts are there in a song and why certain words are there. We went through the lyrics together with everyone present in the room. This was something we never really did. I wrote the lyrics and I was done, just like that. He asked Eloy or Paulo what a certain lyric meant to them and whether they could identify themselves with it. Before we went in he would go and tell that he didn't feel the emotion behind a certain piece or lyric. He was, like, "Give it your all or don't go in at all." We're living in special times. The album is all about freedom and a lot of different energies and a lot of people are relying on our music to get through the day and help them cope with daily life. He urged us to really think about what we are doing, because we're an inspiration to a lot of people. By creating that feeling and vibe, he really got us to go as deep as we could. It really united the band in such a way that we didn't even know we could be capable of. It was a beautiful experience. Ghost Cult Magazine: I do think "Mediator" combines all the best elements from the bestSEPULTURA albums. It has the thrash metal elements from "Beneath The Remains" and"Arise", the groove from "Chaos A.D." and "Roots" and the punk attitude of the later albums…

METALLICA’s LARS ULRICH: ‘I Love SPOTIFY’

During a brand new interview with NME TV, METALLICA drummer Lars Ulrich was asked if he thinks the streaming service Spotify is the future of music. "I don't know if it's the only future; I don't see things that 'black and white' in my life," Ulrichreplied (see video below). "But certainly it's been a great experience. And I love Daniel Ek[Spotify CEO and founder]; he's just a great man. You can tell a lot about a company and the experience by the people; that's my belief. And Danny, he's a great man and he has a great soul. And I love Spotify. Now whether… we'll talk about this ten years from now, whether it's the future or not. I don't know if it's limited to a 'yes' or 'no,' but it certainly is working right now." Last December, METALLICA made all nine of its studio albums, as well as various live material, singles, remixes and collaborations, available on Spotify. The move was significant becauseSean Parker, who co-founded Napster, now sits on the board of Spotify. METALLICA waged a battle with Napster more than a decade ago over the illegal sharing of the band's music, which resulted in both legal action and a battered public image for the band. At the press conference in New York announcing the Spotify deal on December 6, 2012 Parkerand Ulrich appeared together and seemingly buried the hatchet. Ulrich said, "When [Parker] and I saw each other a few months ago. We could see that we had been put down as adversaries. We realize we had much more in common and sitting down was long overdue . . . We were younger, maybe somewhat more ignorant. We sat down and had a heart to heart." In a statement at its web site, METALLICA said, "We are extremely proud to be a part ofSpotify, who not only has a proven track record, but is by far the best streaming service." METALLICA is now able to make these deals directly since, as of last year, the band has complete control over the master tapes of all its audio and video recordings. The band has also launched its own label, Blackened

Rumor: SUICIDE SILENCE Found A New Vocalist

When Suicide Silence's singer Mitch Lucker passed away almost one year ago, the future of the band was very much in question. Mitch was the centerpiece of the band, and at the time the band was far too busy mourning to even think about the future. But it seems the band might be ready to move forward. There are rumors now that the band may have found a new replacement. Lambgoat reports that various sources tell them Eddie Hermida from All Shall Perish is their new vocalist. Previously, it was rumored that former Suffokate vocalist (now with reconstructed earlobes) Ricky Hoover was to be their new vocalist, but that didn't pan out. Hermida makes much more sense as a pick. He is a seasoned veteran of the road and somebody Suicide Silence fans are surely familiar with. He certainly has the vocal chops to pull it off. Check out the video of Hermida absolutely laying waste to the band's "Slaves to Substance" at the benefit show last year: Eddie wouldn't be the only member of All Shall Perish in another project. Guitarist Franceco Artusato is collaborating with Howard Jones on his new band, The Devil You Know.

SEPULTURA: Third ‘Mediator’ Album Trailer Available

The third trailer for "The Mediator Between Head And Hands Must Be The Heart", the new album from Brazilian/American metallers SEPULTURA, can be seen below. The CD will be released on October 25 via Nuclear Blast Records. The artwork was created by Brazilian artist Alexandre Wagner, who specializes in charcoal drawing techniques. Guitarist Andreas Kisser commented on how he discovered the work of Alexandre Wagner. "It was through Silvio Bibika, who was my roadie for a long time," he said. "He always shows me things in general that SEPULTURA might need. Alexandre, who is from Belo Horizonte,Silvio showed me a year ago. So before we went to the United States, to record the album, I was at his house to talk about the cover, tell him the album title, talk about the concept of the film 'Metropolis', so he could do something original. But when I saw the picture with the drawing, I thought it was all about what we wanted and we did not need something new. I asked him to do a tribal S in the style of the cover. The S made by Alexandre will be on the back cover." Said Alexandre: "I did this series of charcoal drawing work when I still lived in Belo Horizonte. They were all made there. They were quick drawings without much reference, almost an experimentation that may have came from a desire to use the most basic of basic materials — coal, paper and wood. The cover design was already done, Andreas saw it and liked it. We talked a little more and I also sent some other pictures for the booklet. I was pleased with the choice of the theme of the album, I like Fritz Lang very much, and not only 'Metropolis'. 'Dr. Mabuse der Spieler' is a fucking great movie." As a Mineiro, from Belo Horizonte like SEPULTURA, Alexandre was glad to be part of the band’s history. "It's impossible to be from Belo Horizonte and not know the band," he said. "Some of their albums followed me for a long time, especially 'Chaos A.D.' I remember seeing'Refuse/Resist' on TV and thinking it was wonderful. It’s really cool to work with the guys, being part of something together. It is somehow a shared history." "The Mediator Between Head And Hands Must Be The Heart" track listing: 01. Trauma Of War 02. The Vatican 03. Impending Doom 04. Manipulation Of Tragedy 05. Tsunami

LACUNA COIL To Perform Entire ‘Karmacode’ Album At METAL FEMALE VOICES FEST

MetalSymphony.com recently conducted an interview with singer Cristina Scabbia of Italian heavy rockers LACUNA COIL. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below. MetalSymphony.com: Could you give us some hints about the new album? Title(s), themes… Maybe it's a bit early yet… Cristina: It is definitely too early… We are arranging the lyrics these days and we are still recording the music. Obviously, I know a lot of details but… let's wait a little bit more! I can tell you that it will be a very… cinematic and dark album, in the vein of "Dark Adrenaline", but even more intense and heavier at times. We also have one special song that deeply touches me. MetalSymphony.com: As you usually do, you've been touring in the U.S. once again. Do you consider there's some point at which you feel more supported in the U.S. than in Europe? What can you recall of this last tour? Cristina: I think we pretty much have the same support from both sides of the ocean. The States are bigger so when we tour there, tours are longer and we need to stay there a lot, but we also have a great following in Europe. I am so happy about the fact that we can connect to so many people I've never even met. Music is magical. MetalSymphony.com: Next October you'll join the line-up of the Metal Female Voices Festin Belgium. After 11 years of this festival, what do you think it still has to offer to the audience? Cristina: The bands are quite different every edition so there is always a surprise in terms of newcomers or new shows given by the most known acts. If you like bands fronted by women, this is definitely the place to be, and is also something unique in the world! MetalSymphony.com: On your side, what will you offer Metal Female Voices Fest's audience? Last year you were there to celebrate its 10th anniversary. Will this year's show be different from that one? Will you gift us with a new song maybe? Cristina: We played last year and it was a success, so we've been invited again and decided to do something we've never done before, play one complete album from the past. We will be playing ALL the songs from the album "Karmacode", plus some more… Read the entire interview at MetalSymphony.com.

HELLOWEEN Singer’s BAD BANKERS Project: Debut Album Details Revealed

HELLOWEEN singer Andi Deris has returned with his first solo album since 1999. Not so much a solo effort in its original sense, but recorded in a band envoirement to achieve a real band feeling, "Million Dollar Haircuts On Ten Cent Heads" will be released on November 22 viaearMUSIC. Written and composed by Andi Deris himself, "Million Dollar Haircuts On Ten Cent Heads"has a crispy, modern sound to it. The diverse, high-class production is snotty, dirty and brutally honest and is described in a press release as "a healthy mixture of HELLOWEEN's recent records combined with 'Master Of The Rings' tradition (Andi's first HELLOWEENalbum)." Recorded together with his band BAD BANKERS, "Million Dollar Haircuts On Ten Cent Heads" sees Deris criticizing the economic system and its corruption. Although the topic may seem a bit dull, the heavy guitar riffs and Deris' recognizable voice clearly make a point: "fuck banks, fuck managers, fuck bankers." He explains: "Obviously we despise everything around banks, managers and bankers who are clearly responsible for the shit that goes on nowadays (and most certainly in our future), so it felt very good to vocally tell them what we think about them. Sure, therefore it's highly explicit but hey… who gives a fuck? That's what they deserve... and it helps the music to really kick some ass."

EDDIE VAN HALEN Sues CONTRACTOR

According to TMZ.com, legendary guitarist Eddie Van Halen is suing a contractor for allegedly messing up a remodeling project at the musician's Los Angeles home. In the lawsuit, which was filed on Monday (September 30) by Van Halen's family trust, Eddieclaims that he hired the Troy Builders Group five years ago for a remodeling and construction project on his home. But the guitarist says there were several major problems with the work, namely the waterproofing, including poor drainage, a leaky roof and chimney and badly installed gutters. They led to water entering the home, which caused the house to suffer mold damage — including to the elevator shaft in the home — and resulted in Eddie having to spend more than $1 million in repairs. Van Halen is suing the builder for the money he is out plus interest.
