Greek epic metal heroes BATTLEROAR have entered Devasoundz Studio in Athens to begin recording their new album, "Blood Of Legends", for an April 2014 release via Cruz Del Sur Music. The follow-up to 2008's "To Death and Beyond..." is being produced by Thymios Krikos (INNERWISH) along with the band. "Blood Of Legends" will be the first BATTLEROAR album to feature SACRED STEEL vocalist Gerrit Mutz, who joined the group last year. It also marks the recording debuts of bassist Stavros Aivaliotis and guitarist Antreas Sotiropoulos. The song "Poisoned Well", taken from "Blood Of Legends", appears in the Greek fantasy feature film "The Dragonphoenix Chronicles: Indomitable". The instrumental track can be streamed below. "Blood Of Legends" will be released on digipack, limited-edition vinyl and digital formats.

SATYRICON Frontman: ‘You Have To Keep An Eye On What People Surrounding You Are Doing’

David E. Gehlke of DeadRhetoric.com recently conducted an interview with vocalist Sigurd "Satyr" Wongraven of Norwegian black metallers SATYRICON. A few excerpts from the chat follow below. DeadRhetoric.com: You made a [statement] after the cycle for "The Age Of Nero" completed that you were going to do things differently for the band going forward, that it was time for you to "re-examine" the organizational structure of SATYRICON. In what ways have things changed as a result of this leading up to the new album? Satyr: [pauses] That change is still going on. There are many things… We've replaced almost all of our crew. And they are important people, they can really influence the outcome of a show both in a good and bad way. They can be there to save your ass, but at the same time, you can do everything you're supposed to do and if they screw up, you're the guy that's going to look like an idiot. We replaced almost all of them; we've replaced the management, we've replaced the main agent which is the guy in charge of Europe; we've replaced one of the guitar players, and we're in the midst of replacing one of the keyboard players. When it comes to the studio, when looking at this record, we sent out inquires to some of the very best mix engineers and producers in the world and not one of them did not respond. Some of them came back asking about money, some came asking about schedule, some people said they wanted to hear some stuff, blah, blah, blah. Then one guy said, "I'm well familiar with the band. I really like SATYRICON and I'm confident I can help them get a really authentic sound." And I read that email that was forwarded to me and I said, "That's the guy that should mix this record with me." And that was Adam Kasper from Seattle. DeadRhetoric.com: While still on the topic of your organization, it's not like the last album was a failure. You've had a significant amount of success, especially in Europe. So, how much examination went into making these kinds of decisions? Satyr: I think allowing myself that kind of distance… I guess it was around Christmas of 2009 that we finished the touring cycle for "The Age Of Nero", and we made the decision in August that we were going to do that. The reason why I wanted to do that is that I felt at that point, the smallest, not even arguments, just disagreements would turn into huge fights and everything was so overly dramatic and I've seen that kind of stuff before and I've worked with tour managers who dealt with that stuff. If it was a business and I was an executive, I would make changes. I started thinking to myself when I was in that situation that one thing is to be the guy with that extra votes and possibility to force things through and turn them down, but you also have to provide leadership in a situation like this. I just wondered what I was going to do, and I decided I was going to impulse-break. And everyone was saying, "Why would you want to do that now?" DeadRhetoric.com: There are some bands of your ilk that you are lumped in with that can be considered commercially successful, like DIMMU BORGIR and CRADLE OF FILTH. They are lucrative entities. Satyr: At least CRADLE are. DIMMU seems to be really lucrative to everyone surrounding them, but not necessarily the band. [laughs] That's more their fault. You have to keep an eye on what people surrounding you are doing. I think in our case, it's like everything else in life. If you want to, after having done this for so long, keep on enjoying it and remain motivated and inspired, which is absolute necessity if you want to make something that sounds good, you have to go look for that. It will not just magically appear. I've had this talk with one of my live musicians a million times. He will sit in the dressing room and complain about something, some stage technician that he doesn't get. Again and again, he will complain, and I will say, "Have you told him?" "No, I haven't." Then I ask him: "How is this situation going to improve? What are your expectations? How will things be different for tonight's show?" And he'll go, "I know, I'll tell him." And I know he won't. [laughs] With SATYRICON, I felt like the break after "The Age Of Nero" was really interesting because I had a different way of discovering the world. I began working a little bit on a wine-making project with wineries and winemakers all around the world, and I got to the see the world without my tour bus perspective. That was really interesting. For example, in France, I worked with a small underground producer in Burgundy. I did a whole wine harvest with him and stayed with his family. I didn't do a lot of grape picking — grape picking is monkey work. [laughs] We did it for vinification. That's where you actually make the wine and to be a part of an old-school traditional French family. I stayed with them. We worked 12-hour days, then they'd gather the entire family for big traditional meals with wines from previous vintages. We'd get up really early in the morning and continue work with the vinificaiton. I also went to Lebanon and there was a winery there where I got to know the people. I stayed with them and their vineyards are in terrorist-controlled areas. Read the entire interview at DeadRhetoric.com.

Former NIGHTWISH Singer ANETTE OLZON To Release Debut Solo Album ‘Shine’

Former NIGHTWISH singer Anette Olzon will release her debut solo album, "Shine", on February 28, 2014 via earMUSIC, the Hamburg, Germany-based international rock label which is part of Edel Group. The CD, which was co-produced by Anette Olzon and Johan Kronlund, is a collaboration with some of the most successful teams in rock and pop in Scandinavia: Stefan Örn (songwriter and producer of the 2011 Eurovision Song Contest-winning track "Running Scared") and Johan Glössner. The album was mixed by Kronlund, Nicklas Flykt and Ronny Lahti (known for his work with Loreen and Roxette). "I am so thrilled to finally release my first solo album," says Olzon. "I've been working on it for a long time by now... "The album is very personal with songs I have started writing already in 2009 but also very recent songs. "The overall message of the album is that life can be really dark and filled with hardship and sadness, but you can always choose to see some light coming through, to make you stronger and full of life — making you SHINE… no matter what." Regarding the CD's musical direction, Anette said: "In the end, it is a rock album. Well, a pop rock album, maybe, or would you call it pop metal?" Olzon in 2011 released two demo tracks that she recorded in 2009 for what was supposed to become her debut solo album. She said at the time, "The songs are not mixed or produced, just recorded in the moment, and therefore are very rough songs. But I still want you to hear them since I am proud of them and I think they show another part of me than you hear in NIGHTWISH." She added, "The first song is called 'Floating' and I call it the 'circus' song. It gives me a happy feeling and the vibe in it is happy and joyful. The second song ['Invincible'] is a song I wrote for my son and therefore it's very special to me." Olzon announced in April 2011 that she decided to push back the tentative release date of her debut solo album to after NIGHTWISH had completed touring in support of its then-yet-to-be-released new studio album, "Imaginarium". Olzon worked on material for her solo CD in 2009 with Swedish producers Stefan Örn and Johan Glössner. The album was slated to be co-produced by Swedish producer/songwriter Anders Bagge, who has previously worked with MADONNA, CELINE DION, JANET JACKSON and JESSICA SIMPSON, among others. He was also one of judges on the Swedish TV talent competition "Idol" and a producer of the TV series "Made in Sweden". Olzon in 2009 hired a personal manager — the Swedish management company Hagenburg Management, which also represents EUROPE and THE CARDIGANS.

DIMMU BORGIR Vs. BUSHIDO: Rapper Accused Of ‘Stealing’ Band’s Music

For the second time in six years, German rapper Bushido (real name: Anis Mohamed Youssef Ferchichi) is accused of having "stolen" music from the black metal band DIMMU BORGIR, this time for his new song "Leben Und Tod Des Kenneth Glöckler" (English-language translation: "Life And Death Of Kenneth Glöckler"). Bushido's track — which will appear on his upcoming album "Sonny Black" (due in February 2014) — allegedly borrows the musical theme from the DIMMU BORGIR cut "Dimmu Borgir", which is featured on the Norwegian group's 2010 CD "Abrahadabra". You can hear both songs below. DIMMU BORGIR in 2007 threatened to sue Bushido for allegedly using melodies from the band's songs on his albums without permission. DIMMU BORGIR manager Yvette Uhlmann stated at the time: "The band was contacted via the Internet and was told that Bushido had stolen the melody of their song 'Mourning Palace' and that he used it in his song 'Mittelfingah'. Since we were not contacted by Bushido through proper channels and told about his desire to do this, it is clear that Bushido has seriously infringed our intellectual property rights." DIMMU BORGIR guitarist Silenoz was quoted as saying: "If the German rapper in question does not agree to compensate us adequately, we will sue him! Whoever crosses us will face serious consequences." Bushido was also accused of having stolen music from the American gothic group NOX ARCANA. Bushido allegedly copied music from three of the band's songs: "Beyond Midnight" (used by Bushido on "Weißt Du?" ), "No Rest for the Wicked" (used by Bushido on "Kurt Cobain") and "Cthulhu Rising" (used by Bushido on "Blaus Licht"). Bushido allegedly took NOX ARCANA's recordings, including the complete melodies, arrangement and instrumentation, then simply rapped over the music. He also registered the songs as his own.

ARAYA: ‘We’ve Never Had To Rely On Having A Hit Record’

Michael Hamad of CTnow recently conducted an interview with SLAYER bassist/vocalist Tom Araya. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below. On the passing of SLAYER's founding guitarist Jeff Hanneman, who died of alcohol-related cirrhosis in May: Tom: "I miss him dearly. I have to remind myself that I'm not going to see him. He's not going to be a part of this anymore... Him not being a part of the band for the past two years: it was temporary, and now it's permanent." On having the commercial route dangled in front of SLAYER over the years: Tom: "When we had just got done recording [1994's] 'Divine Intervention', they had a big meeting at the label, and one of the record reps brought that up: 'You have a really great album here, but we could use a radio-friendly song.' [Hanneman spoke up]: 'You just got through saying we had a great record. You figure out what song you want on the radio and put it out there.' After that, we never had any other meetings with A&R." "We do what we do, and we really enjoy it as a band. We figured that people are just going to have to learn to like SLAYER. In 30 years of existence, we've written some great songs and put out great albums, and we've never had to rely on having a hit record. We all just got together and wrote some songs, and if one got on the radio, great. If not, that's fine too." On Hanneman's contributions to the next SLAYER album: Tom: "Jeff would show up now and then. When we started working on ideas for a new album, it allowed him to see his potential to play... What we [ultimately] put on the album is another story, but Jeff was a big part of that, though not as much as I would have liked him to be. It was really rough on him. But we always got together and rehearsed, to see where he stood." Read more at CTnow.

CANNIBAL CORPSE Bassist: ‘I Don’t See Us Ever Officially Breaking Up’

CANNIBAL CORPSE will wrap up its 25th-anniversary celebrations for 2013 with a pair of shows in Florida, which has served as the band's base of operations since relocating to Tampa from Buffalo, New York in 1994. The concerts are scheduled for November 29 in Ft. Lauderdale at the Culture Room and November 30 in Tampa at the Brass Mug. Asked by Tampa Bay Times if this milestone of 25 years really means anything to the band or if it's just an excuse to play another show, CANNIBAL CORPSE founding member and bassist Alex Webster said: "It's an opportunity for us to stop and look at what we've done. You're just trying to live your life day by day, and you're not thinking in terms of years. … But we had a lot of people around us saying, 'This is a really big milestone and you should celebrate it,' and that got us thinking about it. I've spent more than half of my life in this band. It's at this point where you realize, Wow, this band is my life. Twenty-five years — it's not a passing thing. It is something worth celebrating, I think, that we've been able to spend a quarter of a century playing our favorite kind of music and actually making a career out of it." Regarding whether he thinks there's any chance he will still be doing this 25 years from now, Webster said: "Whew. Honestly, I do think there will be a presence of our band in 25 years. It just won't be what it is now. In 25 years — let me do the math real quick — I'll be pushing 70. … I don't see us ever officially breaking up, but I could see us being gradually becoming less and less active. It's normal. Sixty-eight years and still playing extreme death metal? Check back in with me in 25 years and we'll see if that actually pans out. [laughs]" Metal Blade Records has been releasing one picture disc a month from the band's expansive catalog of releases ("Eaten Back To Life", "Butchered At Birth", "Tomb Of The Mutilated", "The Bleeding", "Vile", "Gallery Of Suicide", "Bloodthirst", "Gore Obsessed", "The Wretched Spawn", "Kill", "Evisceration Plague", "Torture"). A total of 12 pictures discs will be released, covering all of the band's full-length studio albums, some of which have never been released on picture disc. Earlier this year, it was announced that CANNIBAL CORPSE was selected for induction in the Buffalo Music Hall Of Fame as a member of the Class of 2013. CANNIBAL CORPSE is the latest addition to the Hall Of Fame, which also includes Buffalo natives the GOO GOO DOLLS, Billy Sheehan, 10,000 MANIACS, and many more. The Class Of 2013 was inducted into the Buffalo Music Hall Of Fame at its 30th-anniversary induction gala, which was held October 3 at the Tralf Music Hall in Buffalo.

Well known in rock and metal circles for his work as OZZY OSBOURNE's guitarist and as leader of his own band FIREWIND, Gus G. will make his solo debut with the release of "I Am The Fire" in spring 2014. Says Gus G. of the signing: "Loyalty is a very important thing in the music business, and for me it just felt natural to trust my first solo effort to the hands of the record company that has been loyal, supportive, and has helped build my career for more than 11 years now — a label that I truly feel as a family. Thank you, Robert Kampf, Leif Jensen, Antje Lange, Don Robertson, Steve Joh, Jens Prueter, Nasrin Vahdani, Paul Gargano and the rest of the Century family! I truly feel blessed to be a part of CM history and look forward to exploring new territories with this new album!" Century Media founder and owner Robert Kampf adds: "'I Am The Fire' is going to be another display of the amazing talent Gus G. possesses. We at Century Media are proud to work with a player and songwriter of his class and status, as well as the fantastic new album that Gus has crafted. Horns up!" "I Am The Fire" was mixed by Jay Ruston (ANTHRAX, STONE SOUR, STEEL PANTHER) and was recorded between Los Angeles and Gus' home country of Greece through the latter half of 2013. A few of the album's tracks include "Eyes Wide Open", "Redemption", "End Of The Line" and "Blame It On Me". The album showcases a well-balanced mix of active rock, classic hard rock, traditional metal and guitar-driven instrumentals, taking listeners on a diverse journey and opening doors to Gus G.'s soulful playing. Guest musicians and vocalists will be revealed in the coming weeks. Gus G. has had an amazing rise within the worldwide rock and metal scenes and has amassed an impressive body of work, both in studio and touring. He emerged as an up-and-coming talent with the groups DREAM EVIL, MYSTIC PROPHECY and NIGHTRAGE, but it is his work with his own band FIREWIND (who have released seven studio albums and two live releases) and as a member of Ozzy Osbourne's band that have helped him emerge as one of the world's top metal and rock guitarists. His work on Ozzy's "Scream" album led to a Grammy nomination in 2010, and his list of accolades includes Guitar Player magazine's "Best Metal Guitarist," the "Dimebag Darrell Shredder" award at the Metal Hammer Golden Gods Awards, and Metal Hammer Greece "Best Guitarist" on three separate occasions.

AMON AMARTH Drummer On Producer JENS BOGREN: ‘He Took Decisions The Band Weren’t OK’

Mark Holmes of Metal Discovery conducted an interview with drummer Fredrik Andersson of Swedish death metallers AMON AMARTH on November 13 in Manchester, England. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below. Metal Discovery: You've experienced your biggest sales and highest ever chart positions with the new record, "Deceiver Of The Gods", so how good did that feel when the general industry trend is a decline in record sales? Fredrik: Well, we've been fortunate enough to have had the success chart from our first album. The next album has always done a little bit better than the last one, so we don't really see any big differences from album to album. I mean, it's not really that important; the chart positions aren't really that important to us. The only benefit to us is, I guess, to put us on the map for promoters to get shows booked and stuff like that. People know that we will pull a crowd. Metal Discovery: You've done three albums in a row with Jens Bogren producing but you came over [to England] to Derbyshire to record with Andy Sneap for the latest one. Why did you decide to change producers at this stage? Fredrik: I think we felt that, after three albums, we needed some fresh blood into the system and we felt that we had reached the level of what we could reach with Jens Bogren. So we needed something new and some new input onto the music and the band. Obviously, Andy Sneap has been in our mind for many years, I think even before we started working with Jens, but it didn't work out schedule-wise for whatever reason. So, this time, it worked out and it was the right time. Metal Discovery: It was also mentioned in press materials for the last album, "Surtur Rising", that you were aiming for a more "aggressive and rougher sound" too. Looking back now, having worked with Andy, do you think Jens fell short of the aggression and raw energy you were trying to capture? Fredrik: Well, I think we had a little bit of a disagreement on the last album with which direction we wanted to go. And that's also one of the reasons why we felt we needed to move on, because he took decisions that the rest of the band weren't really okay with. It was like having a sixth member but the sixth member was taking charge, basically. We didn't feel comfortable with that. Metal Discovery: You had the legendary Messiah Marcolin [CANDLEMASS] guest on the track "Hel", so how did that come about? Fredrik: I think he and our singer [Johan Hegg] met many years ago and just became friends, so he came up to one of our shows in Stockholm a couple of years ago and we ended up on the bus, drinking all night and talking about doing a duet with him and Johan. And nothing really happened about it but, when we wrote the music for this song, it has this doomy feeling and we felt that would be the perfect opportunity to call him in. And he was still up for it. Read the entire interview at Metal Discovery.

Arv 07. Holmgång 08. The Naked And The Dead 09. Ymer 10. The Hammer Will Bite 11. Blackmoon (bonus track) Commented the band: "'Triumph And Power' has been completed. It's a metal triumph of Viking power!!! "Once again we worked with Nico Elgstrand as producer, a tradition that started with 'Hammer Of The North' back in 2010. "This is our strongest album yet. It has the northern feel, it has the power and the melody that has become our mark of excellence. "Fans of true metal will take this album to their hearts. To top everything off, we have the striking and epic artwork of Anthony Roberts. "The album cover perfectly captures the work on this album and GRAND MAGUS as a band." Due to family obligations and work commitments, drummer Sebastian "Seb" Sippola left GRAND MAGUS last year.
